A friend of mine just bought an Odyssey for $1100 off MSRP in the Detroit area. I am only being offered MSRP in Raleigh, NC. Are there tons of extra fees involved in buying a car across state lines? Should I look closer to home and just out of my current county? Any advise is greatly appreciated. Marci

We bought our ODY out of the area. 500 miles to be exact. Not a problem what so ever on the deal. We didn't want to wait the 6 weeks for the van so I got on the net and called all Honda Dealers in the surrounding 6 states and got one in a week.
Had my local Honda service the car and no problems what so ever with it not being one of his cars. I would say if you don't have a problem on the trip then go for it. The dealer we purchased the ODY would have delivered the van as well for $250 but I couldn't have someone put the first 500 miles on the new van so we rented a car one way and picked up our new baby. The kids thought it was fun to go on the trip, my wife got her Christmas shopping done at the Mall of America and I got to drive the van for the first 500 miles in peace and quiet while they all got to watch DVD's in the back.

Do you think they'll do that for every one they sell? Have you spoken with the sales person over the phone?

I suspect that your friend didn't pay $1,100 below MSRP on a completely new (no mileage) Odyssey. Could it have been used or a dealer's demo vehicle (with mileage)? I suspect that paying $1,100 off MSRP on a new Ody would be unheard of.

I don't think that's unrealistic. I found the same price discrepancy when looking for Certified used. I didn't feel comforable buying used from that distance, so I went local. I used to live in the Detroit area. EVERYONE either works for the big 3 or has a relative that does. They get huge discounts that really makes the Ody more expensive. I would guess that's why they're cheaper.

Check out www.ehonda.com. Do a search for certified Ody's using your zip and then do one using 48084, the zip for northern Detroit suberbs. I think you'll be surprised.

I ordered a EX-L RP from Rock Hill Honda in South Carolina (just across the NC/SC board on 77) for MSRP - $500. They will also sell the 7/100k/0 deductable Hondacare Warranty for $825. It may be worth a drive from Raleigh.

Hi,

I am buying out of state. It can be more paperwork for you, the customer, if the dealer does not do your state paperwork (some do and some do not).
Also, if you do the paperwork then the state taxes are not rolled into the car loan, unless you do a home equity loan.

However, to me the most difficult aspect is that you can't drop by the dealer to see what, if anything is on hand. After a few months it can be a challenge to keep the faith.

$1,100 off isn't unheard of, but probably the exception. We bought our '02 from Moss Motors in Lafayette, LA (about 2 hours from New Orleans) for $600 off MSRP, with no destination charge (really $1,040 off). Salesperson was Ben Conque. I know a couple people on the board from TX bought from them as well.

We ordered the van around Thanksgiving and had it by Christmas. No hassles. They even sent us a tin of cookies the other day.

You can probably find a dealer within a few hours drive that is willing to discount.

Thanks to all that responded to my post. My friends dealer in Michigan actually only gave her a little over $800 off of MSRP after we did the calculations. They actually said they were giving her 1100, but then added all those accessories and her final price was only $839 under MSRP. When she called them today for me, they back stepped a little and offered me $600 in addition to the accessories. We're trying to decide if we want to make the road trip or not. Any other recommended dealerships from anyone is highly appreciated. It's hard to know where to start. Thanks, again to all!

So this was one you ordered, not one they had on the lot? Does it have leather or DVD, etc.? That would be worth a drive. I live in Dallas, so Lafayette wouldn't be too far (and a side trip to New Orleans would be a treat). Thanks.

I think that I let you know this info in your e-mail, but just in case others are interested: My friend went through Novi Suburban Honda. They will give me only -600 but it is on the RES (they implied more haggling would be possible with other models of the Odyssey). Karen Mallad was her salesperson and she was very happy with her. She also recommends talking to Wayne ? at Brighton Honda. I talked with Jerry Marshall at Tammerack (sp?) Honda in the detroit area and he quoted me -450 on the RES, however, he said he would go lower for the other models. He was very friendly and informative even though he knew he wasn't going to get my business. Hope that this helps anyone that's looking!
