No and yes.
No, I don't think so... as the "Reserve" wasn't met. And yes, that was me.

First time I bid on ebay, and although I was the top bid... I was notified that if I still wanted the item, I had to submit a higher bid as the "Reserve" wasn't met.
So I kept increasing the bid by 50 cents trying to find the "Reserve". At the beginning I asked he Seller what his Handling charge was, and he emailed that it shouldn't be more than $5.00. After reaching $31.50 and still being told that was under the Reserve... I stopped submitting bids. I know I can get it for $36.50 with free shipping from http://www.hondapartsforyou.com ...so that looks like where I'll be getting it.

The ebay Seller does have the option (I think) of selling to the highest bidder even though the Reserve wasn't met. But so far I haven't been contacted with an acceptance of my less than Reserve bid.

Would be interesting to know what the Reserve was, maybe it was full retail and they were hoping for more. I know it was greater than $31.50, plus Shipping and Handling. Maybe they'll contact me in the morning and say okay, but I got a feeling they won't.

According to the auction page you didn't increase your bid though---you just rebid $20.50 twenty times. Closing bid amount was still only $20.50. I hope you weren't hitting your back button to rebid.
Oh well, better luck next time! Ebay can certainly be confusing at times!! At least when buying through hondaparts4you.com you know your getting new quality items for sure.
I see a lot of shills like that at auctions. Their reserve prices are much higher than what you can buy the item for new, with the protection of a credit card purchase. Others jack up the shipping costs, while others post starting bids too high, but if you go to the website linked in their description, you find a "deal" on the item below the auction price.

Even worse than the people selling like this are the people who overbid on items that could be had much cheaper brand-new, with only a little searching online... Caveat Emptor.

I can't remember if e-bay does this, but sometimes your maximum bid won't be automatically entered, it just outbids any other bids up to your maximum. Some sites make a distinction between the bid you want to place immediately, and the maximum amount you can reach to automatically outbid others.

My Maximum Bid was _$31.50_, confirmed by email by ebay, which also stated my Maximum bid had not met the Reserve. I think that they only show the bid that outbids competing bids. Someone had bid $20, so they only showed my bid of $20.50 as topping that. It's probably done that way to encourage other bidders. I know when I started bidding at higher than the posted top bidder, he/she kept the High Bid position until I finally topped their Maximum Bid... the posted bid priced just kept increasing until it hit $20.50 which topped their Maximum Bid of $20 whch made me High Bidder, but doesn't publically show my Maximum Bid of $31.50. If I had kept increasing my bid to the point where the Reserve had been met, then publically it would had shown the Reserve had been met, while still showing only $20.50 as the top bid... which I guess is to encourage more people to bid even though their bids would have not done anything other than show more activity until they have would topped my non-shown Maxmum Bid.

If I had met the Reserve at $31.50, I would have won & paid that... even though publically it would have looked like $20.50 had won and met the Reserve... seems a bit disingenuous, huh!

I am familiar with ebay and use it frequently--I thought perhaps you were new to it because of the bid history. It shows you being the high bidder and then bidding $20.50 twenty more times every minute to two mintues. At that point your bid should be bidding against the reserve price. So something was definetly screwed up with the ebay system since the auction page didn't reflect you increasing your bid by 50 cents only rebidding the same amount. Ebay can really screw up sometimes.

I've been known to surf eBay and have seen the same thing. An item I'm researching is offered and the bids are higher than the out the door price at some etailers.

As a public service, good deed for the day if you will, I've been known to e-mail folks that are driving the prices up giving them directions to etailers where they can find the same products--for less. Is that considered bid tampering?? Beats me, but hey, someone has to save fools from themselves.

I'm guilty of doing exactly the same thing recently when I saw two bidders for a cargo tray at $61.50 + s/h of $10 when you can order the same at hondapartsforyou for $57 with free s/h. I sent emai to the one with an email address which happened to be the next highest bidder.

You could be right, I just checked the Item on ebay where it shows the bid amounts... doesn't make sense does it. On each of those bids, I received an email confirmation from ebay showing the bid going up 50 cents a bid until my last one, which was also email confirmed, @ $31.50. I was increasing the bid each time looking to hit the Reserve before my personal cut off at $31.50. But even my last emailed bid confirmation of $31.50 had the same following message...

"While you are the high bidder, your maximum bid has not met the seller's reserve price. In order to win this item you need to return to the item to place a higher bid."

I didn't want to go higher than $31.50 as explained earlier, but I only bid $20.50 _once_, and each bid prior and after was different by 50 cents all the way to my final bid... as was reflected by each email confirmation I received for every bid. What they are showing now, certainly doesn't reflect my actual bids or their confirmation of my bids.

Maybe since $20.50 was my first bid that beat the Maximum of the other bidder, they just got stuck, but I don't know why they kept telling me my Maximum hadn't met the Reserve and I needed to go higher.. if my bids weren't registering?? They were registering okay with the right amounts in the email confirmations.

At any rate, if their emailed confirmation of my bids can be believed... the Reserve still wasn't met at $31.50.

Besides, when I do stutter, my wife bops me upside the head _long_ before I hit 20 repetitions. (grin)

I don't know why I didn't check this out before, but according to the Seller's parts catalog...

http://www.collegehillshonda.com/parts/acc01/odyssey.htm

...the shipping is only $3.00 dollars on that Item, strange that they didn't give me _that_ figure when I asked. They sell the Item for $42.00 in their catalog, which I'm guessing was probably their Reserve, plus the catalog shipping price of $3.00 would still be $8.50 more than from hondapartsforyou delivered.

What's with the huge price spread between this place and Handa-accessories versus hondapartsforyou on the Ashtray??? Anyone else notice that? Has anyone purchased from hondapartsforyou lately?? I notice their webpage on the Ody's Interior items hasn't been updated since last June, hope those prices are still honored for the steering wheel cover. If the price is good on that ashtray, I may get one and "Auction" it! (wink)

Skybolt, I just ordered the cargo tray from HondaPartsforyou because they had the best price. No problem, got it in a few days. And yes, I noticed that price spread on the ashtray. Wonder if it's a misprint.
We bought the steering wheel cover and cargo tray from them in February. Same prices as the website.
Thanks dlh2 and Ody Mom, that's good to know. I tried ordering onlne and the site kept kicking me clear out of cyberspace everytime. After re-booting several times, I gave up. I'll just call their order number given on the site, I guess. Ain't shopping rough? LOL.

Best Regards,
Skybolt
Skybolt, I placed my order online--no problem. Let me know if you discover the reason for the tremendous price spread on the ashtray.
The ashtray kit price is not a misprint, I ordered it and received the whole kit. There are a couple of reasons why I decided to install the kit:
1. It replaces the useless cupholders with a useable LIGHTED small storage space (remove the metal cover) while at the same time it gives you an additional cigarette lighter socket at a more convenient location.
2. Since it connects directly to the battery and has it's own 15A fuse, you can use it for any add-on you might have. I use it to power Clarion powered subwoofer which only uses 7.5A fuse.

So if you are interested, go get it before they realize they make a mistake in pricing.

Thats got to be a mistake on that ashtray price. I was tempted to order it until I saw the installation instructions. More work than it is worth for me since I don't smoke and I do use the pathetic in dash cupholders occasionally when the pinic tray has to be put down for pass thru.
The Ody is the first car I've ever owned that didn't have an ashtray/lighter standard. Harry, I think you just talked me in to getting one at that price. When I ordered the Ody, I didn't even entertain discussing that option with the dealer after seeing the price at Handa-accessories, yet I seem to remember the salesman say something in passing about the $50.00 dollar ashtray. Maybe hondapartsforyou isn't a mistake, ...maybe some dealers are just trying to make a statement about smoking?? Who knows, but I think I'll go ahead and get one from hondapartsforyou, along with the steering wheelcover.

On another note, here's the update on that ebay auction for the steering wheel cover...

I got an email today from the Seller (via ebay), who thanked me for bidding and that the Reserve wasn't met, but they would be willing to sell me one at $35.00 plus $3.00 shipping. Although that's $7.00 less than their (and HandA-Accessories) catalog prices, with the $3.00 shipping it still comes out a $1.50 more than hondapartsforyou. I thanked them for the offer, but told them hondapartsforyou was $1.50 cheaper deivered.

Skybolt
