Each time I turn on the AC on my 2019 Odyssey LX I hear a slight whirring noise for a couple of seconds as it sort of winds up. That whirring sound goes away right after the first couple seconds and wont return until it is turned off and back on again. No problems blowing cold air or anything, but I just wondered if that sound is normal. Sounds like it is coming from just behind the controls in the center main panel. The vehicle is going out of bumper to bumper soon and don't really want to spend for a diagnosis fee when the AC works in terms of doing its job. But at the same time I don't want to later find out this was a symptom of a compressor issue or some such thing. Anyone else ever hear this?

It's probably the sound of the pressures changing on both sides of the expansion valve in the passenger foot well. Either that or the mode & temp doors are rearranging themselves automatically to the new setting. You can see two of these actuators if you stick your head in the driver's foot well. Reach up and hit the AC button while looking at them and see if their control arms start moving.

There is a TSB for HVAC blower motor making noise but it's more in the passenger footwell. I have my van at the dealer right now because they performed the work according to TSB last Dec. but it's back to making noise again. The service advisor called and said they couldn't get it to make noise or hear it. I told her I have 2 1-minute long videos of it the other morning making the noise clear as day. "Idk what to tell you, we couldn't replicate it."

Yeah, probably not buying another Honda after this one.

Speaking of HVAC blower motors, is it this sound?

I suspected that my 2018 Elite had the same issue as yours. It is the blower motor due to internal malfunction. Service Schrader valves leak too.

So I went out to make a video of the sound only to discover it does not make it hardly at all when first started up. It's only after driving with it on for a while, then turning it off for a few minutes, and then back on again that I hear it. I will definitely make a video the next time I hear it. For now I'm going to stay away from any diagnosis at the dealer. I'll try to listen as well if it's coming from the footwell. My sound is not like what Yahmei had posted above. My sound is like this light whirring noise. It could be the pressure changes that 94eg! had mentioned. I will post as soon as it comes up more noticeable again (meaning I'm out using it for a longer amount of time) which should be soon.

In my cars I've noticed the gas noise rather loud after the engine bay has heat soaked. Usually after making a stop at a local store in 100+° temps.

I usually have my radio on so I rarely noticed it.

Yeah, "gas noise" or gas release type noise is a fairly good description of what I'm hearing, plus I'm in the Phoenix area where the AC has to work hard. I'm thinking I've got what your hearing too and that's a good sign. Again, only lasts for a brief couple seconds and then goes away each time.

My Accord makes a little hiss noise for a second or two when I first turn the A/C on or when it cycles. After doing some searching I came to the conclusion that this is just the normal sound of the compressor cycling on/off.

Hi, I have that exact sound with my belly replaced AC in my 2019 Odyssey! Please tell me what that is. The entire system failed and was replaced and this the sound. Thank you

The sound just went away; we went to the dealership and they diagnosed it as a faulty motor (Squealing sound when changing climate zone). The squealing persisted for a couple of weeks after we got our van back, but decided to live with it since our footwell air worked again. Lo and behold it stopped squealing after some time.

Wish I could be more helpful

For those of you that are having this slow hinge like sound, it only happens when you are changing your vent system modes floor/defrost/mid range-dash. It is the actuator that hinges the diverter doors for the air flow in your venting system. I do not know if Honda only installed plastic pins on the hinge points, or if they should have included a nylon or metal bushing for the pin part of the diverter door. Now it's all under the dash and it won't hurt anything, but it is a nuisance I understand. I have not had this part of the ODY apart yet.

Mine doesn’t when turning heat on/off but not switching modes. Think it could be the same thing, though?

@Msdianajones
Could you restate your problem... it's not clear with a double negative. When does it make this noise? By the way welcome to the ODY Forum!

Haha gosh and I’m an English teacher … didn’t reread what I wrote. I was trying to say mine does it when turning the heat on and off- but not when switching modes.
Thank you!

Yes it would probably be the same noise, it is moving the diverter door from the heater core over to the A/C evaporator core. If it sounds like a heavy door on some hinges that have not been lubricated, this would be the problem. Again it will not hurt anything.

I have been in the position to always leave my ODY in the Auto mode of operation and just change the temperature when it's cold or hot outside. The ODY's AUTOmatic control seems to regulate the ODY very well. The only time I change the mode in the winter, and only when I have parked outside, the interior of the front windshield gets fogged over inside or badly iced on the outside. But once it defogs, or de-ices I switch back to AUTO mode. The ODY also had a built in humidity sensor so it knows when it's cold or hot inside and makes the air fill comfortable, not muggy or too dry as well.

Thank you! This is so helpful. I go into panic mode quickly with car stuff- and I don’t have time to get back to the shop any time soon- so this makes me feel better!
