I was thinking last night about Honda and modding the Ody...keeps me up at night when I get on a roll

I'm glad the current Ody platform, at least up til the current year, has kept what appears to be the typical Honda layout...everything fits everything. Or so I hope.

I have a 91 Civic. The great thing is that EVERY Civic motor, and Integra motor fit's my 91, weather it's a 2001 or 88! Why? Honda kept the same basic engine layout for over a decade. Only differences are motor mounts, which some enterprising comapnies have taken care of for us/me.

I am currently installing a B16A1, the FIRST Bseries motor from Honda in the civic...I can even install a B18C5 from a new Type R if I want...it's great! The motor is basically identical from 89 til now. only difference are: motor mounts, and OBD ECU's. I can order 00 Si parts for it even.

now back to the Ody....I was thinking, once this platform is PRE-iVTEC, we are in luck. It seems the Accord and Acura CL are running the same engine layout as the Ody. So what does this mean?

here are my thoughts so far...feel free to add to them, contest them, or try them...I will

1. 02 Ody motor in a 99+ Ody? probably. I'm sure Honda left the same layout, just tweaked. So motor swap for that extra 30hp? I wouldn't..but the engine is a nicer platform to work.

2. CL 260hp motor swap? maybe. most likely? I'll look into it...SHOULD be pretty darn close.

3. CL cams into a Ody? again, most likely. IT's been done before....B18C5 Type R cams in a B16A1, no sweat.

well, off to work for now...i'll be talking to honda ALOT over the coming months

Well, having followed the Honda motors for years and excited about the upcoming 200hp Civic SI (160hp first to the market...but, the 200hp is coming later), and the 220hp RSX Type R (yes, it's coming to the US)..I can only hope that Honda develops a Type R version of the Ody. It's so obvious to complete the product line, develop the first 'real' sport minivan...it's a wonder it has not been done. Picture Type R white, Red interior (gaudy but it's 'tradition), tweaked 3.5L, tuned exhaust, gusseted/reinforced body.....subtle factory body kit....it makes one wonder. Even more so after reading about the minivan craze in Japan...and reading that the Chevy Astro has a cult following for enthusiasts over there!

Am I missing something? What percentage of current minivan buyers are NOT sensible parents, for whom the decision to buy a minivan is driven by space, seating capacity, efficiency and safety? I've no doubt that there is a small market for a sport-oriented minivan, but does Honda really have a track record of defining new markets? I guess sports minivan is no more of an oxymoron than sports utility vehicle... the latest marketing gimmick to allow people to convince themselves that they are in fact driving a seven-passenger sports car.

LOL...well, seeing as how I am a sensible parent of 2, one coming this july, 2 dogs, and bought the Ody for it's space, quality and reliability....and it's a honda...I, like ALOT of people out there am also a car fan, Honda fanatic, and a racer at heart....

there is NO reason that just because I have a minivan that I can't make it just as cool as my civic...and no reason that just because a minivan is stereotypically considered a 'soccer vehicle', that a company like Honda can't make a racer van! I know they won't, at least in the US, as for some reason they aren't big on bringing the good cars here

Nothing is sacred
the day I brought the van home I started painting and setting up in my mind how to make it unique. at first my wife had issues...but after seeing all those 'old ladies' in there Ody's driving around, and then realizing how ours looks just like there's....she gave me the green light and has been excited ever since! She's looking forward to turbo's and rims as much as I am now
I trained her well I suppose

I can only hope that Honda would run a ODY Type R...sigh...in all of our dreams............

I think you are missing something.....
Five years ago could anyone have pictured owners adding superchargers/$5000 23" wheel packages/aftermarket brakes etc to 4wd 'cumbersome' sport utilities? What percentage of sport-utility owners currently use their vehicles off-road. How many have chrome wheels and brush guards that see nothing more hazardous than a parking lot? That is a prime example of an industry where perception of the vehicles capabilities motivate sales. Sure 'sensible' parents may make up the majority of minivan purchasers however that is no excuse for giving them poor handling/underpowered engines/boring appearance. What if the next 'hot-trend' is as obvious, tuned/aftermarket equipped minivans...as it clearly appears to be in other countries?
Do 'sensible' people need a vehicle that carries 7 passengers for the majority of their personal driving? Try commuting in a large city to realize that 90% of the cars have one occupant...maybe those 'sensible' people should ride Segway's? Keeping the Ody for the family roadtrips and carpooling only. How about a forum discussing the percentage of time the Ody is actually full of occupants during the course of a year?
Maybe I am the small exception...an owner that actually takes great enjoyment in off-ramps/the joy of a twisty road etc. Just because I am driving a minivan should not hinder the abilities of manufacturer's to offer packages for enthusiasts. In fact one could argue that small production number packages (like the Type R Honda's) promote sales to the common user. Just like the 'big three' using their vehicles in NASCAR etc. Chrysler boosted sales with the introduction of the Viper years ago...there are soooo many examples.
Just because I am driving a minivan doesn't mean it should be boring and homely. Some of us 'sensible' parents/owners want our cake and eat it too.... I can also add that here in ($$$$$) Scottsdale, Soccer Mom's drive M3/M5's, E55's, 996's...overkill, absolutely...but if Honda built 'the vehicle/GT minivan', 'they will come'.

Thank you

hey, my civic is 'basic transportation', so why is it turbocharged and intercooled?! because I want it that way!
it's all about personal style and wants. We wanted a minivan, but that doesn't mean I have to be limited or restrited to soccer practice and grocery shopping. I plan on AutoXing it and eventually taking it to the drag strip to whoop on mustangs

heck, if companies make lowering springs, ground kits, etc...
I think they do it just because of that big "H" on the grill...anything Honda seems to attract anything speed.

I can have my cake and eat it too, too!
