We just purchased our 2nd Odyssey this one is a 2009 EX-L RES Black Cherry pearl.Living here in the midwest with road salt and winter grime. I'm looking into sound shield, rust proofing, leather and carpet protection and 3M Clear bras . What's been your experience and who did you use?

Thanks

Congratulations with your new purchase and welcome to odyclub.

Did you try searching for the two terms on here?

I live in IL as well. We sure had one brutal winter last year. I have always declined the rust proofing and other protection services from the dealer. Any professional "get the best price" site suggests that's the easiest way to add fluff to a dealers bottom line! Others should agree.

I am super particular about keeping my vehicle clean, even though its tougher with kids, that I have put in all weather mats and custom cut side ones and center bucket mats for when the kids step in and out of the van.

Such "get the best price sites" also suggest that newly made cars are much better made then before and rusting issues aren't as big of issues. As long as you keep your vehicle clean and waxed, you really shouldn't have the problems.

I can't speak of sound shielding? Don't know really what that entails. What's wrong with the way the vehicle sounds now?

Same with a 3M clear bra. Several folks here and other makes and models of cars I've read about like the applications. My service manager where we purchased the Odyssey from, suggested it wasn't worth the extra money to spend on applying the 3M protection. IHHO. (In His Honest Opinion) Once a big rock hits the clear bra its going to tear the application and your left with a tear out section, still a nick and possibly a bigger problem developing later once the material pulls away. He had had several applications on his vehicles. I personally try and reduce my speed and make sure there's more distance between me and the cars in front of me. When a car in front of you kicks up a rock, it basically doubles your speed upon impact to your car. Avoid following the gravel trucks!!

Regardless what you do... let us know how you make out? And what it costs... since your in IL, I would be curious as I am sure others. It also would be good info for those thinking of doing these things as well.

Best of luck.

Stay away from undercoating

in a word,,, NO to the undercoating/soundproofing.
These are just dealer profit items..

If you want real rust proofing check out either Krown or Rust Check...

My last van went through 13 years of Ontario winters (they use more salt than there is snow) and it was 100% solid (all door seams intact, no rust through)...

I live in the Chicago area as well. I believe the rustproofing, paint and fabric protection are a way for the dealers to add to their bottom line. The rustproofing may actually do more harm than good. As far as the clear bra, I would never buy another new car without adding it. I have on on my wife's vehicle which has been on for 3 years with no problems what-so-ever. The clear bra protects against all the nicks and chips on on the hood and bumper. It also makes cleaning off all the bug splatters much easier. I liked the clear bra so much on my wife's car that I had one added to my '08 Acura TL-S when I bought it new last year. I highly recommend letting a professional do the installation.

When we test drove the '04 Civic we thought that the road noise was very loud. My wife still wanted to buy one so we had it soundproofed, rustproofed and scotchgarded. When we picked it up I drove it home and didn't notice any reduction in noise whatsoever. I was pretty disappointed. When I opened the hood one day I noticed that they rustproofed inside the engine compartment but near the firewall and the fender there is a large opening and they only sprayed the top part inside the fender. Lower down there was no rustproofing at all. Inside the trunk only part of the wheel well area was done and the rest was not. As for the soundproofing, it might make a difference if you are driving on gravel all the time otherwise it's just a waste of money. I can't say much for the 3M hood protection, our Civic is 5 years old and it only has 2 small rock chips in the front part of the hood which I touched up paint and you can hardly tell it's there.

I bought a '06 EXL-RES and didn't get anything extra added to it. I went to Walmart and bought a couple of cans of 3M Scotchgard and sprayed the interior carpet myself. Put on a couple of coats and it cost me under $15. I just had to park it in the garage and leave the windows open a few days to air it out overnight.
