I had been following some threads on brakes -- spongy or pedal goint to the floor -- since I've had that problem on my '95 with 170K miles. Chased it with master cylinder replacement and was worried about defective booster, but had not resolved it.

A couple months back, I found the problem: My original front rotors were rusted and crumbling on the inside surface. I could not see the problem without removing the rotors to look. Replacing the front rotors (and rears for good measure) fixed the problem. Now the pedal feels right.

I thought I'd start a new thread so the next person to search will find this and can consider looking at the inside of their rotors
