I have had an ongoing periodic annoyance with the rear brakes when starting in reverse from a cold start. They squel as I back out of the driveway. After the van has warmed up no more problems. The dealer checked the brakes and said they were fine.

I also have a new problem. When I put the van in reverse and start backing up I hear a metallic pop like something is loose, IE. maybe the catallytic converter cover??? It also does not sound like the dreaded reverse transmission clunk.

ANY THOUGHTS!!??!! Anyone, Anyone!!

Honda is investigating the cause and what it will take to fix the rear brake noise. A friend of mine had his Odyssey inspected by someone from Honda R & D. They took his whole rear brakes assemblies and sent them to japan. So I would wait and see what happens. I am hoping they will do a service bulletin like they did for the front brake noise.

As for the clunk, I havn't heard that!

I have the same problems on my van. Also had the front brake "pop" on my 91 Accord after the pads were replaced.

I can tell you about the front brake "pop".

What you are hearing is the front brake pads moving within the calipers when you change directions. It manifests itself as a "pop" upon first application of the brakes after changing direction.

I understand from other posts there has been a few different versions of brake pads out there, but the problem is still being worked by Honda. Sometimes new pads cure the problem, sometimes they don't.

My understanding is that it is an annoyance, but definitely not a safety issue. Note it to your dealer and follow-up with them to get it fixed before the warranty runs out. If you time it right, you might get your first set of normal replacement pads for free

I have had a post on this subject since August 31st. Only one person said they had the same sound when reverse braking, but their car was at 29K miles. I thought I really had something uniquely wrong with my 01 MB LX with 1500 miles on it. If you look at my thread "Brake Sound in Reverse," you can read what a really nice Ody Club Member (TrickedOdyssey) found out when he asked his dealer about my problem.

I am not glad that others have the same sounds as me, but in a way, I am. Maybe Honda will do something about it now!

I have 2002 EX RES with around 6000 miles and get the same squeaking noise backing out in the morning. Happens only when the engine is cold. My friend also gets the same noise. He took his van to the dealer and they could not find any problems

Lets see what they tell me at my 7500 service.

I have a 2002 Ex and have noticed the same thing. (When backing up first thing in the cold)I've also noticed it with my Pontiac Grand Prix and also with my neighbors vehicle as well.
So i don't really think that there is a problem with the odyssey's brakes but then again it doesn't hurt having Honda check it over.:)
