Steering sound "clunk" when reversing and turning hard

I notice this almost every time I park in my garage. It's a side load, so I have to turn hard right, reverse it turning hard left, then I can pull straight in. I can't make the turn in one attempt.

Anyways, I notice a distinct "clunk" sound then the car is reversing. It happens just before the wheel makes the stop for the hard left. It's repeatable for definitely this left wheel reverse, and I think it happens on right wheel reverse. Just curious if anyone has noticed this sound before. I plan to take it to the dealer. It happens before the hard reaches the end of it's turning ability. Sounds like some suspension issue to me.

I took my van in a couple weeks ago to the dealership for this same concern. They couldn't replicate it (surprise surprise) but I wanted it noted on the record while the van is under warranty. They inspected the suspension and steering system and did not see anything out of place.

Hopefully I can consistently replicate it using the OP's instructions and then take the service adviser on a test drive to show them.

I’ve has in mine new 2019 since the first or second weekend. Heard it and scared myself and my son. Took it in last Monday. They said it was the top of the strut tower which they did something to and lubricated. I can’t attest to the sound resurfacing in the last four dats - yet.

Update, for my situation what i found was the front left lower nut on the swaybar link was no where near tight. It was barely snug in comparison to the right side. I tightened it and reroadtest and my noise is gone and hasnt made any noise for the last 5k miles. Ive read through all these threads and i see that there are several different concerns going on. Figured i would give a heads up.

Yesterday, after spending a fortune getting the door sills and chrome door trim, the dealership said they discovered this intermittent sound was caused by a tie rod end that they ordered and will replace tomorrow in about an hour.

rls002, I would also be interested to know if the problem was fixed after changing tie (outer?) rods.

My 19' EXL & NAV (Feb 2019 production) has about 350 miles, but I already heard this "clunk" sound twice.

Since there are at least 9 folks with the apparently same problem we might need to bring this to the attention of the corporate.

For the most part YES. I’ve heard it a couple of times since the left strut tower assembly was replaced but the sound is just gone.
Now, I’m dealing with this metallic clink just on start up that is inconsistent but usually the first start of the day.
I’ve been very pleased with how my dealership has handled themselves and my complaints. I have been cordial and professional and they have commented to me that if these issues had been theirs on such a high end vehicle, that they would not have been as nice.

Hey, new poster here but I would like to chime in on this.

I'm a member over on the Ridgeline forums but figured I'd post over here as well. We recently purchased a new 19 Odyssey Elite and around 800 miles in it developed strange sounds from the front end. The sound didn't manifest as a clunk but more like if you were to crumple plastic or a foil lined bag of chips under a pillow when you would turn the wheel. I had noticed the steering was a bit twitchy as well but had attributed it to the lousy OEM Bridgestone tires (I dumped the Bridgestones on the Ridgeline pretty quick).

Long story short, the dealer just called me and said they traced the issue to the inner tie-rod. My dealer is replacing the tie rods on our Odyssey.

Well, it seems like replacing tie rods did not solve the issue for rls002's van.

Please let us know after dealership replaces tie rods and you drive hundred miles or so if the front end noise is gone.

Thank you!

@rls002 I've found it to be a big YMMV when informing the service advisors about the issues seen on the forums. When the G2 Ridgeline was new we had some issues that we would swap info on in the forums and inform service advisors about; The advisors we knew seemed to like it while others didn't really care.

Our van is still in the shop...ironically they gave me a Pacifica loaner (with the S appearance package). We crosshopped the Pacifica Hybrid but it was just missing too many features compared to the regular Pacifica and Odyssey. I am sure the Pacifica works for some but overall I find it annoying.

Good to hear your vehicle is back and everything is working now.

I just got mine back today and the problem with mine is gone as well. The dealer (my preferred dealer) for me is about 30 miles away via the interstate and the sound didn't present over the journey back, albiet I wasn't turning the wheel hard on a fairly straight interstate. Will have to see long term though. The steering vagueness that developed is also gone as well. I'll have to cut the Bridgestones some slack for now, however; from past experience I expect the wet traction from the Bridgestones to be done around 12-15k miles (like on the Ridgeline).

This issue is a “known” issue with Honda NA. Replacing the left strut assembly seems to have seen loved my problem, at least for now. Very happy with my dealership taking my complaints seriously and not sending me away with a lame “can’t reproduce” excuse. Honda Canada SHOULD know of this consumer complaint. I challenged my service department manager to alert Honda corporate of my issues since I had been following these posts and KNEW they were real. Hope you have your problems solved soon.

I’m a Michelin guy myself and replace tires almost exclusively with them.
I’m glad no other sounds have resurfaced. The service manager called me today to get my feedback on the repairs. I gave her what she wanted to hear - because it was the truth. She wanted to make me happy and offered roof rails for free. I added the cross bars and the chrome rear bumper protector. I’ll probably spend $600 in installation labor costs which will negate any good feelings. I was charged five hours labor just to install the door sill illumination and lower door chrome trim. Honda estimated time doesn’t exceed 2.0 hours for all of that combined! $463 for labor. 0800 - 1230 You tell me if you would not feel taken.
That being said, I’m overall ecstatic about this purchase - even without little ones around. Just me, my dog(s), and maybe the wife.

I thought the auto start stop system on the Pacifica was near imperceptible compared to the Odyssey. The Pacifica also has options to configure what feels like almost everything about the vehicle operation in the infotainment system UI. Two vehicle settings I found interesting were: an option to specify a timeout for how long the accessory power stays on after you turn off the vehicle (exclusive of accessory mode), and one to auto engage/disengage the parking brake when in Park or Drive. I thought the "S" appearance package looked nice on the van as well.

The worst part of the Pacifica for me was just how it drives. The Pacifica feels really heavy on the road and has a lot of body lean compared to the Odyssey. The Odyssey dispatches rough highway expansion joints with a solid "thunk" and that is it, while the Pacifica feels like it just went two-three rounds with a bouncy castle and lost. The overall ride in the Pacifica reminds me of a Ford LTD station wagon, some people like that feel but it is just not for me.

So looks like the noise came back again. I took it to the dealer today and their shop foreman sat in it and heard the sound as well.

I'm in the process of dropping it off right now as he was unsure how long it would take.

I mentioned the shock tower replacement that was referenced in one of the prior post but he was unaware of it. He seemed to want to get the Honda tech line involved.

He mentioned there were a couple other Odysseys in for similar noises at that time.

Yeah, they finally traced it to a crossmember under the vehicle. I talked with two of the people at the shop that worked on my vehicle and one had pictures of what was going on. There is a spot under the body where two boxed pieces of metal overlap and they were rubbing when torqued from steering inputs.
The cross members don't move a whole lot but it would be like what I would imagine two moving tectonic plates would be like, slow and nearly imperceptible normally but when they bind they release "pressure" (in our case noises) suddenly or gradually. I suppose they could bind at full lock and make a clunk sound as well although I can't speak for others..

"Yeah, they finally traced it to a crossmember under the vehicle."

amdsupport: Thank you for update on this!

I brought my van 2019 van for the door water leak (driver side) and for this loud clunk/metal sound coming from the front. The water leak was fixed, but the 'clunk' they could not reproduce.

Do you have this sound every time you start driving or periodically? I heard it about 4 or 5 times so far backing out from the driveway.

Mine is on a 19 passport but I’ve been bouncing around forums and I’ve seen the same complaint on the pilot, passport, Ridgeline, and odyssey forums..

Whenever I turn right into a parking spot and let the car sit for at least 10-15 minutes and I back out of the spot turning the steering wheel to the right about midway through the turn I get a sometimes subtle sometimes loud popping/clunking noise. It doesn’t seem to do it when turning left and the car typically has to sit an extended time for it to happen. Does that sound similar to what you experienced in any way? They replaced both front strut assemblies just not the springs but it still does the noise

Both. Yesterday, I was backing out from the driveway straight and sound happened almost immediately. A week earlier, the sound was when I turned the wheels after backing out from the driveway.

Damn.. Im curious what that could be, especially if it does it just going straight. I know the ABS makes a subtle pop noise when you hit about 6mph but I doubt you get up to that fast reversing from the driveway unless you have a long drove way maybe lol.
