Hi,

I recorded the video below from my friend's 2015 Lexus RX 350 with 58K. It sounds like slapping belt, but not sure. Any clue? Thought of removing belt and try the pulleys, but seems tougher than the Odyssey because of limited space. I just don't want to sign up to Lexus forum for this. He drove more than 1K with this noise and the noise will come and go. Sometimes, it stays. It does have electronic power steering pump and no lights in dash / no drop in liquid levels.

Thanks..

Can you see the physical alternator belt and whether it is loose? I figure, with 6 years and 58K miles, it might be time to replace the alternator belt anyway, so maybe replace it and see what happens.

As far as i can see, there is only have one belt which drives everything like our vans. When it is making sound, the belt seems normal.. i mean no wobbling or moving. Kind of in a hard spot than Odyssey. Always thought Lexus/Toyota was easier to work.

It definitely sounds like a slapping belt. Saw some YT videos about water pump noise and few of them sounds very similar. Not leaking, but seems the bearing is bad. Even to take out the belt, it is a challenge on this suv.

I will update once we figure it out. It makes sound randomly.. mainly once warms up. Otherwise, silent. Plan is to do the usual way. Make the sound, then remove the belt and check each component.

In this video it sounds exactly like bad rod bearing.

Wouldn't that make sound all the time? Also at 58K, isn't it too early for serious engine damage like this? Since he owned it, It was never ran with low oil.

58K, isn't it too early
Yes, way too early, especially for Toyota engine. But, that's how it sounds on this YouTube video - rod or something else serious.
I wouldn't drive or even start this car, untill it fixed.

He drove almost 1200 miles with this sound (done a road trip). Morning, no sound at all. Also makes sound after some time and then stops and then comes back.

Talked to him and he is taking it to a local shop tomorrow morning. Will update. Engine internals, too much for a DIY person :( .

It was the water pump. Shop replaced it. All good.

Seems common with these engines..

Interesting. Toyota had a bad batch of water pumps in the late 2010s, but I haven't heard many issues with the newer stuff, like 2011 and up. They don't typically fail this early, usually will last until 150K at least. I suppose there's bound to be some that fail early.
