Well, I'm back in the pickle barrel again. If somehow the Magic Seat gets dropped into the well without the pull strap visible after the drop, just how in the billy-hell do you get the blasted thing up and out of the well again! We've tried just pulling up on the plastic finger handle: no dice. We've tried heaving from both sides of the seat back: no dice. It comes up a little, then hangs up on something. It seems the actual seatback at the bottom of the package is catching on something. What?

I mean, guys, two new transmissions, a second car, and now back 20 miles to a dealer to pull up a seat? I'm beginning to feel like a total idiot. Am I?

I just tried mine and had no trouble lifting the whole package by the plastic handle without the strap. The strap seems to just be an assist and the lack of it shouldn't prevent pulling the seat up.

It sounds like the two parts of your seat are unlatched so when you pull the top one the bottom one pivots and starts to bind in the well. The only thing I can think to try would be to push down on the top piece to see if it would latch to the bottom and allow lifting the whole unit. If not, there's something wrong with the assembly that latches the two pieces together and no, you're not an idiot.
Good luck.

Here's another suggestion - I unbolted and removed the LATCH anchor that was inside the rear well on the center (bumper side of the inside well). I don't use the LATCH system, and it was beginning to chafe the leather on the back of my 3rd row seat whenever I dropped it into the well.

groupset,

I like the idea of removing the LATCH bracket. We a set of marks from the one time that I put the seat in the hole.

Merpsmom,

I had a similar experience wit the seat being stuck. I believe that the reason my was stuck was that we had a golf umbrella in the hole on the side closest to the seat. I believe that every time I tried to pull the seat up it was binding on the umbrella against the floor. After 10-15 minutes, and a little calming break, the seat seemed to just come up. I did have the advantage of having the lift strap though. Good luck!

Minor technicality-

The anchors on the sill of the magic seat well are not the LATCH anchors. They are the top-tether anchors. Top-tethers can (and should) be used with most newer carseats, even those not using LATCH.

The LATCH anchors are the two that are located in the seat bight/crack of the second row captain's chairs of the 2001 model.

This morning, I called a dealer very close to me (not mine, but my dealer recommended him) and questioned why the seat might not be operating right. His immediate question was "Do you have leather?" Apparently, it's thicker. Anyway, I ran down, and in 5 seconds he had it upright. He growled at me that I should never allow the strap to get underneath, I whispered "Yessir" and was on my way. (Well, yeah, but...I'm a hundred pound weakling and he's Buster Burly. So there.) At any rate, I will indeed be more careful.

Strange. I have NEVER left the strap out when put the seat in a well (I don't remember the manual to say this). NEVER had a problem pulling the seat out by just a handle.

Just an additional comment on how to get the seat out.

Make sure you shove the seat down further into the cargo well HARD.

You need enough force to get the top and bottom half to latch together.

With the top and bottom latched correctly, you won't need the strap to pull it out.

p.s. johnkalajian's (Senior Member) message in a different thread gave me the info I needed to solve the stuck magic seat.
Thank God for this forum!
