Hi. I got a quote from my local Honda/Acura repair guy for the 105k service. (I have an '04 Ody.) To replace the belts (including TB), water pump, TB adjuster (tensioner?), extended life anti-freeze, and spark plugs he wants about $1,250. About $532 of that is labor. I've never replaced a timing belt, but I have replaced belts, water pump, and radiator on my '98 BMW. So I'm not completely clueless when it comes to work like this. I was just wondering if anyone had any input as to the difficulty of doing this DIY, based on my skill level, which I would say is about 6-7 out of 10. Any thoughts?

There are very good write ups in this forum and youtube videos you can use as reference and have the process thoroughly thought out then decide if you want to take the jump. Well that is how we all got started. Consider the work you have done and the tool you likely have I believe you can do it, though you may need a few more tools. If you run into any problem during the job you can come here and I am sure the forum members will be more then happy to walk you through.

As for my experience, the Odyssey TB job is relatively easier then all other car I had worked on in the past for example, the 2 camps Odyssey is not as easy to screw up and easier to work then a 4 camps of what ever.

Lucky me at this moment the other 3 cars in the house are all with chains. I had got into one to replace the chain guides and it is nerve wracking but I got it done.

If you have time and patience to do the job then you should be fine. It is not a quick replacement. Breaking the crank bolt loose was the hardest/scariest part to me. Starter bump trick worked like a charm but makes a racket. Mark the pulleys/belt and transfer marks to new belt so you are assured proper alignment.

I'm about the same skill level and pulled it off. Here's my tips:

1. Rock Auto.com get the Aisin TB kit (appears to be OEM supplier and exact match to dealer parts)
2. At Harbor Freight get the serpentine belt tensioner release bar (skinny), metric impact sockets and a 1/2" breaker bar for the starter trick. The starter trick makes it cake. For putting it back on HF also has a 1/2" electric impact wrench that they claim 200#ft for. I just hammered it back on with that and called it close enough (~$55). Makes tire removal totally easy too. LOVE that tool.

I have an 03 EX-L with 71K on it and I was debating to do the TB job myself, or possibly trading it in to get a new Ody.
Just for giggles I went to the dealership ( where I purchased my Ody 10 years ago, and the same salesman). I thought for sure I was going to get top dollar for my van, but the best they can do was $4,400. I laughed. I am not going to "give" my van away after all the blood, sweat and tears I put in it the past 10 years. Plus this year alone I did the shocks, quick struts, new battery, and the tires are only a year old with 7K on them.
I look at it this way. If I drive it for another year, I would save $500/mo or $6000 in car payments.

Your price quote is high for nearly $700 in parts. Parts should run you MAYBE $300.

Great list... Thank you...

Just pull up to a smaller repair shop & ask them to break it free and retorque lightly. Spot 'em $5 or so.
Have the splash shield removed so they can reach in with the wheel turned.
