I am looking a buying a new 2018 Honda Odyssey. This would be my 3rd Odyssey. i am going to retire from work in about 8 months and just purchased a camping tailer, weight 2000 lbs. I would like to tow it with the new Odyssey. I know the 2018 Odyssey has a new transmission, 9 speed. Anybody have any feedback? Does a transmission cooler increase the towing capacity? I here the Pilot has a 5000 lb. towing capacity, probably a better choice but I like the sliding doors of the Van. i would be putting a lot of miles on it.

I would think you could do it. I just bought a 3,000lb r-pod that I normally pull with my Ridgeline, but I ran the numbers to see if my 2018 Odyssey TE could pull it and it was okay but close. One thing is the Ridgeline comes with the 7-pin trailer connector for trailer brakes and the Odyssey tow package only has the 4-pin. That could be upgraded though. Trailer brakes are important in a trailer that heavy.

I just installed a Drawtite hitch on my 2 week old Odyssey. It took about an hour and that's with 2 old guys doing it LOL.
Fits perfect. I still have the harness to install, that's next week's project but it looks pretty simple. I have a trailer that weighs approx. 2200 lbs full that I'll pull for short distances so it should not be an issue.

2018 Odyssey comes with an external transmission cooler. I tow a 3000 lb trailer with a 2017 Odyssey with no issues. It does use a lot more fuel and will stay in the lower gears when going thru the mountains. The 18 has more hp and torque and should do a better job. I've towed the same trailer with a 2017 Pilot and the gas mileage is worse then the Odyssey because of the four wheel drive.

I just bout my 2018 Odyssey LX and asked for a hitch to be added. I was surprised that they outsourced the install to a local shop and I asked at the shop about the cooler and was told not to do it. They have seen nothing but problems as long as you stay in that 3000lb limit (including added weight from people and luggage) you would be fine.
