Re: Ody + trailer= Bad Transmission?

We also have been looking into a pup. Honda is replacing our 1st tranny @ 90,000 miles next week. Questions:

1-Will pulling a pup trailer just increase the likelihood of these buggy Ody transmissions going out?

2-Do you need to pull a pup in regular Drive, or is it OK to pull while in Overdrive?

Thanks.
I responded to your questions in the new thread you started:

ps. short answer... Please get a tranny temp gauge. It's less than $100 and worth every penny!;)

I am wondering on the few people that have Ody's and a towing RV Trailer what type of gas milage you are getting? I usually use a Buick Roadmaster Estate with a V8 to do the job that normally gets ~18MPG unless towing then it drops to about 8-10MPG. I am toying with the room of a suburban but until then I just wondered how your Ody's do. I already have the electric brakes and trans cooler and so on. This is a 16 foot and it has a HUGE drag when pulling with the wagon that I think the Ody will help with that and it actually has about 50-60 more HP in the Ody.

I get high teens to 20mpg on the highway towing my large popup. Not a huge amount of wind resistance though.

I averaged 15.5 towing a 17' 3,500# Casita over 17,000 miles in 16 trips. Individual trips were between a low of 13.5 to a high of 18.4, which I attribute to terrain and wind direction. I towed at 60 MPH.

I tow at the limits of our weights, don't worry I never am over by more than 50#, I know this due to painstakingly weighing through the last 6 years of towing. We usually get 15-18mpg when towing our popup with bikes on top of the camper. I did close to 20 one time on very flat run through Florida on the way to Disney.

To save weight I sometimes remove the back seat, which is the weight of decent sized child.

Hi

Pull a pop up gvwr 2400pounds and do not have any problems with a family of 4. Never weighed it but did notice if i fill up the tank and squeeze it in the back does drop a bit. But for an hour drive it is ok. i am looking to upgrade to a hybrid trailer. Though from my research I am at a crosspoint and need some feedback please.

After doing research talking to dealers and mfg I aa getting mixed opinions from both. i have the tow package, van gvwr as you klnow is 3500 and my hitch weight is 350. the trailer i am looking at is dry weight 2600 and 3500 gvwr, dry hitch 310. i was told after gear propane and battery i will be over on everything. some people say can push the van if take it easy other say can burn out transmission. not sure if tow package included extra transmission cooler or just a bigger cooler on the van? Also was told differential hitch and torsion bar will help weight but transmission still gets a work out. I have seen odysseys pulling these trailers and bigger. does anyone have experience with this or feedback? I was considering gettign a bigger car. please do not take offence but i do not like gm had them before. turned to honda but the pilot is to small and not interested in ridgeline. started looking at sequoia but want to keep a v6, reviews show the gas mileage is horrible. so looks like there is not much out on the market that has the space and practicality of the van

thx

My Casita trailer weighed 3,500# loaded, and had a hitch weight of 500#. I used a weight distributing hitch as a result. My Ody had the Honda towing package with tranny and P/S coolers.

We towed this trailer over many mountains and terrain for nearly 20,000 miles and it did it easily, with no over heating. I did get some inside rear tire wear after one trip where there was extra weight in the back of the Ody, but after making efforts to reduce weight there it didn't re-occur.

I wouldn't hesitate to tow another 3,500# trailer.

Old thread resurrection - love it!

My popup officially weighs 2,000# empty, but is 2,700# loaded to go. And we do NOT bring a full water tank or have an AC unit on the roof. My final GCVW is a bit over 7,800# weighed. So even if you pack fairly lightly you will be over GCVWR starting 600# heavier than me on trailer weight. If the rig is a popup, you MIGHT get away with it (I don't recommend trying). If it's a full height trailer, forget about it.

Our 03 has close to 15,000 miles to towing (including Rockies, Smokies and Black Hills) of its 199k total and still has the original transmission. When you set the rig up right and tow within your limits these vans can last.

Hey! That's Silver Lake! I recognize that site. Our '99 Odyssey just made its last trip to Silver Lake in Aug with 330K miles. Just bought a used '04 with only 95K miles and can't wait to go again.
