New here!! We have a new to us 2015 Odyssey Elite 123k miles with a judder. It is at the dealer right now for extended warranty repairs (which the warranty denied all claims for 馃槨). The dealer is recommending the 3x drain and fill with software update and is charging $650 for it.

We did a 1 time drain and fill a couple weeks ago, so we know what that process is like and could do that part ourselves. But then how would we get the software update? The service specialist said the update alone is $175... does that sound right? Could they do the update before 3x drain and fill while the van is already there? Then I take it home and perform 3x drain and fill on my own?

Anyone successful in getting honda to cover that TSB even out of 80k miles? Or have any suggestions? I an looking in to muzzle, but it seems the software update should happen no matter what, right?

Which TSB?

You can also just try doing your own 3x drain and fill and see if that fixes the torque converter problem sufficiently for you. As for the $175 cost - that's probably 1 hour of labor... so yeah, 'reasonable' by dealer standards.

Thanks for the reply. Ya, the total cost for 3x drain and fill and software update is $650. I've seen a few different TSB like 16-060. They haven't mentioned any TSBs to me though. I have to pay a $175 diagnostic fee anyways, not sure if it's worth it to at least do the software update there or not. 馃

Its TSB 17-043. I would do the 3x drain and fill yourself and just get them to do the software update. I just had mine done a couple weeks ago and can feel the difference. My judder wasn't bad and the dealer could not get it to act up so that warranty would cover. The manager agreed to apply the software update while doing a 1x drain and fill for $40 so I thought that was an ok price. I will now do an every other oil change drain and fill.

Good luck.

Honda will not perform the firmware update without the 3x drain and fill (ask me how I know). Don鈥檛 waste money converting to full synthetic for them to drain it all out and replace it with DW1.

Mine applied the software update. It was at my cost. I was due for a 1 drain and fill. I only have 25k on the van and the judder was not bad and they could never duplicate it to be covered by the warranty. I have also seen numerous post on here where others have gotten the software update done at their cost. I felt it was worth it. I plan on doing my own drain and fills every other oil change as I did with my previous Ody.

I understand now. However if the vehicle is eligible for the TSB on Honda鈥檚 dime, they will not perform just the software update.

Thanks for the clarification!

Is the judder only on the 6 speeds? I have a 2012 EX with a 5 speed transmission. I don鈥檛 鈥渢hink鈥 I have the judder, but do notice it doesn鈥檛 coast well on occasion. Don鈥檛 notice weird shifts.

This 'judder' - what does it feel like? I have felt a light 'shudder' as the box changes gears sometimes, and the shifts seem to be a little hard for the throttle position. Ours has had three D/Fs at the dealer about 20K miles ago. I don't know if its had the trans re-flash or not but I think I would have taken notice of it. Oh well, I'll ask them about it next time. Meanwhile we have two more years on the mechanical breakdown policy. :)

I also got the software done with a single drain & fill at the dealer. I think I just paid for the fluid change. I was getting other items checked by a tech. That part made the difference. Dealers have dedicated "Express Service" oil change guys (who can also do the trans fluid), but it takes a real Honda trained tech to connect to Honda's computer.

A reflash will help with that, but it also sounds like you need another trans fluid change.

The "judder" is a slight oscillation in the RPMs as you are accelerating. Watch the tach during 'normal' accelerations in 2nd and 3rd gears (say, 20-45mph). If it doesn't go up smoothly, that's the judder that the TSB talks about. Harder/less smooth shifts are a different issue and should be helped by new fluid. A single drain and fill is an easy DIY if you don't want to shell out $$$ at the dealer.
