About 2 or 3 months ago I was sustained about 80mph on a long stretch of 75mph interstate for about 280 miles of travel. All of a sudden I lost 4th gear and noticed my back windshield was getting full of oil. It was transmission fluid VENTING.... apparently I'd never known about this, that if the fluid got too hot that it could force itself out of a "VENT" that is on our Odyssey's of this era. I've never heard of it before in my life, but it happened, because there were no others leaks found. Knowing I was low on fluid, I managed to find a place to get some and topped it off before finishing my trip. Finishing the drive home it acted fine like normal and got me to the trans shop.
Trans shop said next day they couldn't find anything wrong with it, but that they adjusted my fluid level UP.... whereas I was positive it was already full from the previous night.
Drove it some more. Eventually (maybe a couple weeks) it started missing and revving high out of gear... and in particular it seemed 2 to 3 was not doing well, but now ALL gear shifts are harsh UNLESS UNLESS..... I FEATHER THE GAS VERY VERY SLOWLY AND ONLY DECEL OR ACCEL AT A VERY SLOW RATE OF SPEED. Driving like this and being sure before I do that I warm up the engine 10 to 15 minutes FIRST (makes a big difference) it will drive mostly fine all of the time, but if I deviate at all and try to accel or decel "fast footed".... it will let me know it doesn't like it and miss the gear and rev high as if I'm revving the engine in park.
So.. the trans works better when HOT.... there are 2 coolers on this van.. the Stock loop bar and one I added about 3 years ago when "what I thought that I had" was a trans rebuild... that now I'm not sure if I was given a used already put together transmission.
On the original transmission, I had the recall done for the gears and fluid.... though I don't know if that was an external thing to the transmission or internal fix. I bring this up in case the transmission.
I had Seafoam Transtune in there for a while, thinking that the interstate overheat issue may have produced gunk or varnish clots in the trans and hopefully that would work it out. I had the Transtune in there for about 2 or 3 gas tanks fill ups and probably could've done more.
Same behavior.... did some reading on the solenoids.... looks to me that just those could be the problem, but I'd want to full them all and pull the screens
2 shops say I'm heading to a rebuild or replacement... but why did neither shop bother to take off a solenoid and look at the screens in them? I am wondering now if that is all this is the whole time because of how the van acts better for shifting when its HOT.
Had the fluid changed too recently despite my thoughts not too... was hoping if there was some clotting the veins of the trans that it would take care of that.
Lastly, engine light and TCS are on... and there is a code for gear shifting problems between 2 and 3... and if I start my drive... the gears miss at 2 or 3 or 3 to 4 and eventually the D for drive on the dash starts blinking fast. I then stop the van, let it sit a moment, restart it and then I can drive again and access all the gears I need ..... going feathered gas pedal slow.
What are the odds I just have clogged solenoid screens? or just a Transmission range selection out of whack?
IE: Sometimes when the engine is COLD at first startup... selecting the gears R or D do not get shifted into right away.... it takes an unusual few seconds for it to get into gear... unless.... again.... unless I warm up the engine first, but if I don't... it'll act up every single time.
