A question for those who have a '99-'01 Ody - The 4-spd transmissions that seem to be problematic, were these transmission from Japan? If not where are they from? On the '02 Ody, the window sticker indicated that the transmission came from Japan. Just wondering if there was a change in origination with the 5-spd to possibly address the problems with the 4-spd.

All the trannys are from Japan on the Ody, and I think this holds true for all Hondas sold in N. America. I have never seen one with a transmission country of origin anywhere else but Japan.

My understanding from reading an article in Car and Driver is that the 5sp is fundamentally the same unit as the 4sp, but with a gearing change that allowed them to get 5 forward speeds without much internal changes. The ratios are different for 1-4, as is the final drive ratio. Whether or not the 5sp develop problems remains to be seen. It's my understanding that the vast majority of the original units never develop problems, but those that do typically suffer the same symptoms. Service manager told me that there was an undersized bearing in the early units, and since that was fixed all has been fairly good. If failure occurs during factory warranty, a Honda rebuilt unit is installed. If outside factory warranty, whether customer has HondaCare or not, a rebuilt unit from "Howard Engineering" is installed. I was told that the Howard units are performing as well as teh Honda rebuilds. Hope that's true. Was also told the Honda rebuilts essentially have all new internals but a used case. The use of a used case prevents them from being able to call them "new." All this from dealer service manager. He's never steered me wrong yet.

It will be interesting to see if anyone can resolve the different info from accordian and Canodyssey! Where are those Ody transmissions really coming from and why does accordian see something about Japan on the stickers?

Canodyssey, thanks for that link. Some of the material there looks a little different from hondanews.com and it's always nice to find some more general text that's more technical than the usual sales stuff.

The link is a good one - lots of technical information that's not normally advertised. As far as the transmission origin - I have an '02 and my window sticker clearly states that it came from Japan. This is more accurate than some web based propaganda. Maybe at some point they will be made in Ohio, but the window sticker does not lie, otherwise lawsuits can arise.

My Ody was built 12-01 in Alliston, Ontario. According to the window sticker, the engine was built in U.S.A. and the transmission was built in Japan. I have never seen a Honda window sticker indicating a transmission built anywhere else.

Looks like the website information is simply wrong. I believe whoever wrote it confused the engine manufacturing facility for a transmission facility. It may be an official Honda website, but that doesn't mean it's correct.
