I have gotten thise noise like 5 times now. Only happens when I first start the car in the morning and only has happened about 5 times.

I start the van and when I shift it into reverse I hear a pretty loud noise for a split second. It will only happen once because I always put it in park and then reverse again and it has never made the noise again in the same day.

Other than that one noise, everything runs fine, no noise while riding. I have a little over 1000 miles on my exl.

Has anyone else gotten this noise when first shifting into reverse after the car was not used for 12+ hours?

I read a thread about this noise in this forum it has something to do with the ABS engaging according to a Honda technician. It does it on mine as well so I'm no longer worry about it since it's been talked about as the ABS kicking in.

Thanks, but this is not that. The abs sound kicks in when you are moving forward at around 12 mph.

This noise is a loud "crunch" noise that happens as soon as I shift it into reverse to get out of my garage. Like I said, it hasn't happened many times in my 6 weeks of owning my van, but it is a very big concern at the moment.

Does Honda get their transmissions from Chrysler??? :(

I have started to have this issue as well. I get it throughout the day sometimes--not just the first trip of the day.

Yesterday was the worst. I had been on a lenghty drive on the freeway. I got off the freeway to check on some paperwork and make a call. I pulled into a parking space that was slightly sloped so that the front of my Ody was lower. I pulled in the spot and didn't pull in too far so I could allow some "rolling room" (I used to drive a manual;) ). Anyway, I put it in park and set the parking brake. I left the engine running and in a few minutes I was ready to hit the road again. With my foot on the brake I put it in reverse and it did it's ugly sound and kicked. Then I released the parking brake and I really had a huge flashback----I thought I was driving a 5 speed and felt rusty on the clutch. The van rolled forward--hit the cement parking barrier and I had to floor it to get it to go in reverse :( .
I had a friend with me and this was rather embarrassing. The transmission sounded really funky. It didn't help matters either that the windshield was whistling all day

I suggest trying the following: Before you put the vehicle in park, keep foot on brake and put it in neutral (also try skipping this step to see what happens), next apply the parking brake--ensure you push down all the way! Next, put it in park, next take foot off brake. Now turn it off.

Do you still have the noise when you take it out of park and put it in reverse?

Also, at other times, do you switch between drive and reverse when the vehicle is competely stopped?

just make sure your parking brake is pushed all the way. I did that routine and no more loud clunking

In addition, when you get into the van the reverse is true. Make sure you select your gear before releasing the parking brake. Otherwise you did the first step for nothing....

BTW, this is true of any vehicle when parking on a slope. Our van is just heavier, and it may be more noticeable.

Before you can move the selector you have to be pressing the brake pedal. If you are pressing the brake pedal firmly then you can release the parking brake before you select reverse, at least I find it works for me.
