We picked up our new 2002 Ody SS EX-L last Friday and I've been loving it except for a noise that comes and goes. I am still trying to figure out where it is coming from but it seems to be a vibration or reverberation noise that happens occasionally when riding on a road with consistent bumps (more than just a couple of potholes). Sometimes it gets pretty loud. Is this normal for the Ody? I traded in my 1999 Accord for the Ody and thought they would be pretty similar in road noise. This was a surprise.
I've been quietly reading this board for several months now and have appreciated everyone's input. You all are one of the reasons we decided to wait for the new 2002. Thanks!

Noise, vibration and harshness has been my #1 complaint with the Odyssey. Mine makes quite a bit of "racket" over washboard type surfaces. Tire "rumble" is also quite bad, on some surfaces. This is the sort of thing one misses on short (or noexistent) test drives.

Just got off the phone with the mechanic that fixed my rattle that I heard shortly after taking delivery of my 02 EXL. The noise was coming from the right side of the front end when I drove on the surfaces that have been mentioned. The strut and spring assembly sits on what he called a cup. When I would drive on certain roads or hit certain bumps the spring was coming in contact with the cup. (It was frustrating because it wouldn't happen all the time) He adjusted the cup so that the spring no longer came into contact with the cup. Problem solved and noise gone. By the way, he told me that he has fixed four more Ody's after mine for the same problem. Sounds like they do have a problem with the front strut assy. On mine and the four other Ody's that he's fixed it was passenger side only. I'm glad it was an easy fix because I really am happy with my Ody. Make sure you make the mechanic look at this. When I first took mine in they tightened up and re-torqued some bolts. As soon as I drove it off the lot it made the same noise. Did a U-turn and said I didn't want the van until the noise was gone. It took him four hours the next day to find the rattle. He wasn't going to give up until he found it. Good luck.

After two trips to the dealer and being told that the rattle went away after they took everything out of the glovebox (to which I actually laughed over the phone when talking to the technician), our passenger side strut assembly was replaced this past week, and the suspension rattle seems to have disappeared. Definitely have your tech look at the struts!

I have noticed that a number of folks have had the sturt assy replaced versus mine being adjusted. The noise is gone after the "cup" the strut sits on was adjusted. I'm just wondering if I should let it go or should I tell them I want the strut assy replaced. Any suggestions? Leave good enough alone or get a new strut that will probably make noise?

Mine has a similar noise. I asked the service manager about it and he immediately said they replace the strut assembly to fix it. It has something to do with the way the spring sits on the unit causing the spring coils to rattle against each other.
