hey everyone I hope you are still watching this forum — I have a similar issue but not quite the same with an 07 as this one here: 2007 Weird Electrical - VSA & /!\, AC stops blowing...

for a couple years we would very occasionally get an issue where we couldn’t start the car at all OR the lights for the transmission would blink or show weirdness (P, N, P, R, 1, 2). Every time, just moving the shifter up and down would solve the problem. Also our Verizon HUM reported P1717 and Emissions from the OBD. I read in the forums that it is very common for the transmission range switch to get corroded. Mechanic tried to get a new oem switch for weeks and couldn’t, so I ordered one from amazon (not oem). All the above problems went away, but a new weird problem happens intermittently now:
1. VSA, /!\, and ((ABS)) lights come on randomly; I think they only turn off again if we turn the car off and back on then they will go away after several seconds usually
2. sometimes but less often the sliding door will beep instead of opening even when in Park and doors unlocked
3. I noticed that sometimes the front wiper interval setting doesn’t behave normally - the shorter duration setting in interval mode should be constant but has about a five second delay and the longest will be about 10-12 seconds; but then sometimes it works normally — this happens sometimes even when the VSA lights are off
3. the HUM still reports P1717 and Emissions frequently, but now also also reports U0155 at the same time as those.

Maybe a side note is that in the last few years we replaced the steering wheel coil to fix the radio volume buttons, and also ended up replacing the MCU to fix an issue where sometimes the headlight low beams would randomly turn off (but high beams would keep working and bulbs were fine). But the timing of this current issue is not correlated with any of those and it started after the transmission range switch was replaced.

FWIW I’m in Northern California where it is often 40s and humid in the mornings and then sunny and dry later in the day. And no the car has never been in a flood luckily (I’m the original owner).

So I am thinking maybe the non-OEM transmission range switch is bad and I should replace it again, but maybe something else is going on?

Sounds like classic water intrusion issues to me. Usually from the roof seams.

Update for anyone else who comes across this thread. Zero sign of water getting in anywhere. (Knock on wood.)

I picked up a BlueDriver and did the All Systems scan. It showed P1717, U0155, U0028 and then also for the ABS system 15, 16, 27, 83, 86. Two of the codes specifically called out the rear right wheel sensor. So my mechanic replaced it and after driving for a couple weeks ALL codes are still gone — everything seems to be working well now — except the wiper interval still seems inconsistent. I’ll have to look at the wiring diagrams to see where that could be - maybe in the switch itself.

BTW the BlueDriver is awesome - it seems there are a range of OBDII readers out there and many less expensive ones don’t scan as deeply as others (some don’t scan ABS, some can’t clear codes, etc.). I am guessing that the reason BlueDriver has such a good value is that they use your phone’s screen instead of building a screen into the device. A great $99 spend imho.

While true, one of the Foxwell tools is not much more than the BlueDriver and can do everything the BlueDriver can and then some with the bidirectional features. Plus it's not needing a phone to use it.

ok so I was searching the forums about the intermittent wipers and after having the car for 15 years today I learned the intermittent frequency varies with the speed of the vehicle … 🤦‍♂️

from the manual:
The length of the wipe interval is varied automatically according to the vehicle's speed.
Vary the delay by turning the INT TIME ring.
If you turn it to the shortest delay, the wipers will change to low speed operation when the vehicle speed exceeds 12 mph (20 km/h).
So it looks like the car is problem free now! Yay.

Manual does not state it, but I can also confirm what others have posted — after testing today (in the rain) — that on the slowest interval the wipers will activate when releasing the brake pedal.
