Expected gas milage for 2001 Honda Odyssey

Hi, all. This is my first post, as I just purchased a 2001 Honda Odyssey EX with 42,100 miles in October. My family is really enjoying it. (It's my first minivan and by far the fanciest vehicle I've ever owned.

On thing that concerns me (besides the potential tranny problem, which I didn't know about beforehand), is that on my first two tanks of gas, I'm getting only 12-14 mpg in primarily city driving. We don't spend much time idling and I'm not an aggressive driver. It just passed emissions testing and the check engine light hasn't come on to suggest a problem.

Is this something I should expect? It seems awfully low, even given the usually inflated EPA estimate of 17 mpg for city driving.

Any comments/suggestions are appreciated. This is a great forum.

Welcome to the club! In my experience I get an average of 18 MPG US or 21.5 MPG Imperial. I don't think I ever got 15 before, but I did go as low as 16 a couple of times and a high of 25 (Imperial).

The best advice to give you is spend some time using the search button (top right). Most answers to ?s have been answered in the past.

Topics to get up to speed on: transmission warranty extension, EGR warranty extension, ATF fluid drain and fills, brake fluid replacement, cabin air filter, clock light bulb, power sliding doors.

Honda owner link for recalls, warranty extensions, service bulletins, etc. (you'll need your VIN#):

I've been reading alot on poor mpg on this forum lately and see some have leaned towards replacing the front 02 sensor. Like you, I purchased my 00' EX with 42k on it and got hiway mileage in the low to mid 20's. Now it's more like 12-14 hwy. Just ordered a replacement 02 sensor from sparkplugs.com for $58.73 plus ship. Hope this does the trick.

Good Luck!

BEST is to measure Highway mileage

because it has fewer variables than city.
On HIGHWAY. I get 25 mpg at 65 mph.

Make sure the tires are inflated to 38-40 psi range.

Checkspark plugs to be sure thy are OK, at 43K miles, they should be fine.

Tires are pumped up to 40psi on Hydroedges, new OEM plugs replaced recently, running Mobil-1 5w-30 synthetic. I think running thru the hilly Virginia mountains in heavy rain with the defroster on took it's toll on the mpg. I'll average it out on the way back when the weather should be sunny & in the upper 50's.

Just to clarify, there's 65k on the clock.

Well, got back late Sunday night and have to say there's a definite improvement in gas mileage since replacing the 02 sensor. Heading North from Atlanta to New York we incurred really bad weather (rain & wind). The Ody was fully loaded going up some hilly roads in the mountains with the defroster on. Still averaged 22.13mpg over 833.5 miles. On the way back there was much more traffic (bumper to bumper) but the weather was great. Even then we averaged 22.3 mpg over 780.4 miles. Around town before the trip I think it averaged 16-17 mpg around town. This is similar to the figures I was getting when we bought the Ody with 42k miles. The 02 sensor replacement was definetly a worthwhile investment.

I had my oil changed at Honda about 8 weeks ago and they put in 5w-20. I was quite surprise as all I had ever used was 5w-30 in the fall and 10w-30 in the spring.

I made several trips to Phoenix from Tucson over the past few weeks. I have been getting around 22mpg on those trips. I have no problem with that since AZ speed limits on Interstates is 75, and mos of the traffice runs about 80 mph.

At 80, I don't think 22mpg is too bad.

My city driving around Tucson yields me around 19mpg.

My site recently launched a real-world fuel economy survey, which includes more questions than most. I've noticed that Ody fuel economy tends to be all over the map. I even emailed one owner about an especially low number. He reaffirmed his accuracy--has been to the dealer four times about it.

Anyway, my site's page for the Odyssey:

Damn winter. I will do another gas mileage check. But the Odyssey is not great for our city driving as of lately. Isnt' that what an SUV gets?
None I ever owned....! The all did better than that

Now granted, I'm only into my 4th tankful since we bought our Ody but our OVERALL mpg avg is 14.92.

That's 2 tanks at an average of 14.15 mgg (stop & go and around town driving plus idling for 1/2 hr. a day for either heat or a/c and DVD for our 4 y.o. as the wife 'reserves' her front row parking spot waiting for the older kids at school) and one tank at 16.9 mpg of mixed driving (at least 1/2 of which was highway).

I haven't done any extended highway driving yet to see what kind of mileage I can get with it, but otherwise the mileage seems just about in line with what my '99 Grand Caravan used to get with the 3.3L and less h.p.

The vast majority of EPA estimates are way off-base so throw them right out the window. These are 4000-4500 lb. unladen, non- to semi-aerodynamic bricks with relatively hard-working engines to get them motivated.

**UPDATED 12/11 to add my latest tank got 267.8 miles from 15.751 gals. (17.002 mpg) of mixed driving.**

Hints or help?,
In sept., I bought a 03 Taurus w/ the base eng. I check every tankful and the best is once at 21, 20 2-3 times, worst is 17 5-6 times, 18 would have to be the avg if calculated it all out. I was avg 16 when I drove the Ody everyday. Is this avg for the Ford, if anyone knows. Is there a site for the Taurus that is helpful?
Thanks for the Ody assistance.

Oh, good grief. You should be glad it isn't worse. The ACC spot on the ignition switch is your (and the air's ) friend.

You're not kidding! There's about a 3 week period in the spring and fall where no heat or A/C will be required, just the ACC for the RES. It should be interesting to see what not having to idle does to the mileage per tankful.

My 2000 Ody does do pretty well in highway driving (26-27 mpg @ 70 mph) in the summer. Winter, probably 15% less. However, before the recent spark plug replacement @ 82K miles, it was definitely worse than that. In the city, the Odyssey is expected to do around 14-15 mpg (stop-and-go traffic or plenty of traffic lights, short trips, etc.) And yes, those numbers are similar to the ones for traditional SUVs. That is a fact of life. Remember that the EPA numbers for city tend to be too high. For highway, I tend to always do better than the EPA numbers with every car I have owned.

Well, the O2 sensor I ordered for our 03 didn't do much of anything. C'est la vie!

But, I put new spark plugs in it, and *holy cow* that did it!

We were getting 13-14 in the city and maybe 17-18 on the highway. I just did 207 miles on 8.3 gallons. That's 24.9! I bet I could have cracked 25 if I had gone 65 instead of 70.

That's as good as it was when it was new, maybe better, considering we're on winter gas, and the gas now has 10% ethanol.

All those who said 105K for spark plugs is bunk are right on the money. I'm a believer - it makes a huge difference. I've got 42K on the van, and the new plugs should pay for themselves in just a couple months. I used the stock NGK ones, and reckon I'll replace them again in about 3 years.

Oh, and the wife even says it's pepier now, too!

gas mileage for '01 odyssey

Yes your gas mileage seems a bit low .My wife's '01 Ody gets between 20-24 mpg on the high way with a full load of kids and luggage going 70 to 75 mph. We've just turned 100,000 miles and going strong!
In regards to the tranny,do your self a favor and get an after market trans. oil cooler installed. You can get one from any auto parts store and do it your self. The cooler offered by the Honda dealer's aren't worth it.
I'd definately put in some new spark plugs too.
