Looks like my 06 sunroof just blew up, reading here on the site only mentions that it occurred,
I am looking for possible fixes other than going to dealer ship.
I have see a few of the glass sunroofs on ebay but how much of a hassle is the R n R of the glass.
Will probably have to remove headliner, bloody drag,
just looking for input on replacement options, thanks,
Frank in Rio

have you tried going through your insurance? some have free glass replacement, im not sure if this applies to the windshield only but it wouldnt hurt to try. worst thing that can happen is they tell you no. my 2nd step would be to go through a glass company, many nowdays will come to your work or home and do it there for you. probably cheaper than going to a dealer. again it wouldnt hurt to give the glass company a call and get a free estimate.

Frank, that's amazing. I mean, I've seen a number of instances during an Africa-hot SW TX summer where a side window just blew up, especially if it was rolled up tight. However, we haven't hit the "hot days" of summer yet, and we've already got a glass casualty on the books. Any other details (like whole van closed up tightly), or did it just give up the ghost unexpectedly?

While it's not technically "free glass replacement" since you are paying for the overall insurance, every policy I have ever owned included full glass coverage, meaning that all windows were covered, with no deductible. I have not specifically had to deal with a sun roof issue, so I can't speak directly to that, but full coverage should be full coverage. A quote from the Allstate website seems to indicate that the sun roof is covered:

"If the only areas of damage to your vehicle are to glass components, such as the windshield, side windows, rear window, and sunroof, you have come to the right place with Allstate's Glass Claim Express®"

I once asked my Ins Co if multiple glass claims could increase my coverage. The answer was in most cases, No, although if it was determined that there was some sort of pattern, such as consistently parking in a "high risk to glass" areas or consistently driving in areas where rocks were chipping the windshield every other day, it could become an issue.

Thank for the input on insurance will call them as well but not putting much faith in them. As far as more details, it was about 9AM and just got on freeway temperature about 55 °F, all other windows were up and I had just opened the glass back a few inches then decided to move it to the vent position insread, made the move to vent then about 2 minutes later boom. The roof must have been stressed during the earlier move and then just blew!
I checked the hot sheets and looks like I should be able to remove without pulling headliner, now just need to verify and find a new glass.
Thanks

It blew on the freeway? Holy smokes! I've heard that "bang" that tempered glass makes when it disintegrates into all of those little bread crumb sized pieces. It's loud!

What is this "55 °F" you speak of? I think I've heard the term before but I don't remember from when or where. ;)

The outside temperature was about 55 degrees, not very warm to have warm weather as a issue.
Bang sounded pretty cool but I glanced up and could tell the glass was shattered, bummer I said and shut the visor. We pulled over at the next stop and removed the glass.
Will dig into it more once we get back to town after vacation.
Thanks
Frank

Well the fix for me was to buy another glass off ebay, removed the 2 trim panels and six torx screws and cleaned all pieces of broken glass, swapped in the new glass, and all is good. Thanks for all the input.
