Hi,
I just bought an used 2008 Touring and preparing for the 1st oil change myself.

I used Mobile1 High Mileage Full Sync on other vehicles, no significant positive affects, but it did stop the oil consumption issue.

I heard that Pennzoil Ultra Platinum suppose run better than the Mobile 1 and keep the engine cleaner.

But not sure if anyone in this forum had tried either of the engine oil on their 3rd Odyssey?

Any comment is greatly appreciated .

I have used Mobil1 synth oils in every one of my vehicles for every oil change since the mid '70s with the manufacturer's recommended weight, period. That includes every personal vehicle and every vehicle in our business fleet, so that's an additional 150 or so vehicles. Never a problem, never an issue. For the sake of convenience, we would change oil and filter at every 10,000 miles on the nose, a habit I have maintained 'til this day. We tore down an engine with almost three-quarters of a million miles on it (from a wrecked truck we were playing with) and it looked like a new one.

I would not change to any other brand, regardless of promises made or pennies saved, but that's just me. YMMV...

You will get different opinions from different people. Just use what ever is available which is 5W20 or 0W20. Use full synthetic if you can (not much difference now a days).

For the odyssey, last 2 oil changes, i used Pennzoil ultra 0W20(Walmart - ~$25) full synthetic. On my other cars, Mobil. Also used Castrol and never had any issues. For other cars (VW and BMW), only certified oils is Mobil 0w40 or German Castrol 0W30 (only at autozone). I guess for our Honda, it is fine with any brand with proper weight.

One more thing i noted is, Mobil makes engine sound little different and Castrol/Pennzoil is same. But no issues with either brand.

BTW i have 2010 EX with 50K on it.

Good luck with first oil change. I use a torque wrench for tightening the drain bolt (not exactly needed). Also a oil filter wrench will come in handy. Look for the tips in the forum on how to avoid spilling oil on the exhaust so that you wont get burn oil smell for next few days. A proper long funnel is also needed.

Yes, just pick one and drive.

Boogety,
Sounds like you are a PRO who has been working on car for long time.

Didn't know Mobile 1 has Synthetic oil since the mid 70s.
Learned something today

Just my personal observations...

...have been using Mobil 1 in both Odysseys for quite a while. As others have noted, aside from the normal varnish on the insides of the engines, whenever I've pulled the valve covers I've noted how clean the insides of the engines have been. Impressive, considering how we really push the oil here with pretty severe temperatures and heavy towing occasionally with either van.

I was a Castrol GTX user for decades, and have torn down or opened up a couple engines in my time (including on my own vehicles), and the Mobil 1 has seemed like a clear winner in keeping the insides free of deposits. Mobil 1 wins hands down in keeping the engine quiet when our 114-deg F summers turn into below-freezing winters. Never "heard" such silence on first morning startup in snowy conditions before.

We did switch to Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic just once because of an impossible-to-pass sale. Both vans seemed a little noisier on first start of the day, but still pretty quiet all things considered. No change in mpg, the vans just seemed to run as smooth as they did with Mobil1.

Halfway through their respective oil change intervals with Pennzoil Platinum and with the first appearance of cold weather, both of our Odysseys developed significant oil leaks. It sure was too much of a coincidence? Dunno, but we've gone back to Mobil1, and each van received treatment with ATP AT-205 seal conditioner. Leaks are stopped for now, but we'll see what the next winter holds for us.

Mobil1 was formulated to survive oil change intervals of 25000+ miles with no degradation in performance. At the time, the holy grail of engine manufacturing was (and is still today) the "sealed" engine, a propulsion device that would last the life of the vehicle with no owner maintenance. Mobil1 was formulated to be one of the first steps towards this lofty goal.

Vehicle manufacturers eventually decided other, more realistic goals were worth pursuing more, so the idea was put on the back back back shelf of R&D for the time being. An engine with lifetime lubrication would be a huge selling point, and we may still see it someday... But for the time being, the only thing we have to show for the "perpetual" engine is the Mobil1 formulation, and all its benefits.

Mobil1 has the most benefits. Been using it also lately after detailed reads. Previously did not care which one. Agree on Penzoil. I do use it if on hand when I want to do a quicker interval change or dumping any cleaner, never for normal interval.

Instead of Penzoil, read in another forum about the best Quaker State one for use in high mileage engine. It has some better cleaning agents that might be helpful. So if I had to I would pick Quaker State over Penzoil. As I do not have too much bad things to say about Penzoil, I just avoid it; some might have good experiences...

I also get what is on sale this week (Castrol, Valvoline, Quaker State). As for the filter sometimes the sale says upgrade with $2; I do that.

Yup. Walmart. Costco has good prices on Mobil1 too.

On a separate note, I was over at Toyota dealer parts to get stuff. Noticed that one shelf behind parts counter was fully stocked with just Mobil1 next to shelf with toyota OE. Thought that was interesting.

I have used Mobil 1 Full Synthetic for over twenty years. Usually use the factory recommended viscosity. All engines ran well with no excess usage. Why change brands? That just my personal choice. With the exception of free new car oil changes for the first two years I always change my own oil/filter and other light maintenance. I prefer no one else touch my vehicle. Period.

Hey kck3888 - Glad to hear you are considering Pennzoil for your Odyssey's next oil change! Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is proven to keep pistons up to 25% cleaner than Mobil 1. ....*blah blah blah*
Nothing like a stupid-@55 piece of advertising in the middle of our discussion. No thanks. Spam posting reported to mods.

Thanks GenaFishbeck, now I know what oil not to use.

Your spam just lost your company at least one customer.

Likewise. Now I know what oil to attribute those ferocious oil leaks to.

Pennzoil. Proven to have cleaning agents so aggressive that they will destroy your rear main seal (my 2003 EX) and the formed O-ring filter on the oil filter mount (wife's 2002 EX) on any Odyssey.

Amazingly, if you've even seen an Ody piston from a well-worn engine...they stay clean. These engines are not oil burners, even late in their lives (250,000 miles+, or 400,000 km+). We don't need the cleaning agents (for 25% cleaner pistons...yeesh). We need something that lubricates the cylinder walls, plays well with the oil control rings, and keeps bearing journals happy.

Mobil 1 for me from now on all of our vehicles, and I'm just following all the people who've reported happy, long-term results.

Buh Bye, Gena. So long, Pennzoil.

We have corolla (of the gen) that burns oil. That is another daily driver. When I use Penzoil it burns faster than others. When I use it, its about the time I plan to seafoam it. I do not like to waste Mobil1 during that quick interval. Mobil 1 has had the best results even in that oil-burning engine.
