2006 Honda Ody. Timing belt interval?

Hello folks! Just picked up my new 2006 Ody ex-l. I love this thing! Too bad the wifey drives it everyday. Anyway, I was curious as to what the timing belt interval as the owners manual is very vague... It basically says if you live in either extreme hot climate or extreme cold climate to change the belt every 60k miles. What if you don't live in one of these extreme's? I known on my VW TDI (diesel :D :cool: ) that is it manditory that the belt be changed every 80k miles. (unless of course you have the upgraded tensioner etc) Does anyone know what the exact interval is for the Ody? Also, is this the type of engine that IF the timing belt did break would it cause damage to the head (bend valves etc)? Or would it just be a replacement of belt and off you go again? (I know my 1986 ford escort was like that. it would break a belt every 15k miles like clock work) Anyway, thanks for the help guys!

I have done a search, and found nothing for the latest gerneration Ody. That's why I have posted. Again, there seems to be nothing 'written in stone' that states when the belt should be done. Even in the owner's manual.... Is there an average or exact time to change the belt????? It seems there would be a simple answer to the question. maybe not?

105,000 miles. The maintenance didn't change. Except for the VCM models the engine barely changed. There is a thread here with a list of downloadable owner's manuals. Just check out the schedule in an 04 one. For your year the MID tells all. Besides reminding of oil changes, there is a letter code for what needs to be done. Is there at least a list of what the letter codes mean in the 06 manual?

By the way, the MID is not just counting down miles to the next oil change. It really does base oil change intervals on the driving you do. We have had owners needing service in as little as 5000 miles and as much as 10,000. Trust me this Honda is no Volkswagon. The van cost a fortune, and low maintenance costs are one of the things you bought.

Oh, and by the way, hanging around here for several years, I don't remember any broken timing belts. We have had folks write that they are at 120k and maybe they should think about getting it done. We all freak out and tell them to do it yesterday. The whole 105 service, that includes expensive spark plugs all the belts, hoses, etc is over $1000. so saving up as you get close is a good idea.

In my opinion, timing belt = high maintenance (just a way to guarantee their dealers lots of $$$ in unnecessary work)

Timing chain = low maintenance

But that is a rant for another day... :)

I think there is also a time limit. (7 or 8 years?) If I waited until 105,000 miles it would be around 10-12 years, so I'll probably have to change it around 75,000 miles (8 years or so?).

Maybe I'll stretch it a bit also, like Egads said I've never heard of anyone here having one break...

You are exactly right. No definite interval is mentioned in the 2006 owners manual for normal conditions. It does say that at "maintenance sub item 4", spark plugs, timing belt should be changed, water pump checked and valve clearance checked. There is no definite mileage listed for this service. I would prefer a mileage based recommendation so one could plan ahead. Some day, maintenance sub item 4 will come up and then, surprise surprise, a big repair bill will be due. An owner would not know about the 105k mileage recommendation for the 2004 model unless they read the old owners manual for a vehicle they do not own.

I have a 2006 odyssey ex with 150,000 miles on it and have never changed the timing belt. I think it is about 100,000 miles is the limit. DYI is not a good idea because it is so technical. My Honda dealer has run a special this month for 399.00 to change the belt. It is also a good idea to change the water pump and the tensioner for additional 300.00. Total cost is around 700.00 to due the job. But it could cost you 6000.00 for a new engine or 40,000 for a new odyssey if you do not change it. I checked around with local repair shops and was quoted $1200.00 to change it. The dealer normal price is $995.00.

You may want to check the date of the last post in a thread before you bump it with a new post. The last one before you was 9 years ago.

I have a 2006 Odyssey EX and just got some quotes from Honda dealers. The price for replacing the TB and WP is insane. They charge around $1100 with only inspection for the tensinor, pulleys and seals. Thermosat is not included. Only 1 year warranty. Is this a rip-off? My location is Metro Denver.

I used to do my timing belt changes at around 150K. You might be able to skip the water pump, but the tensioner, pulleys and seals should be replaced along with the timing belt. You can probably skip the the valve adjustment they push as well.

I can't comment on tensioners or water pumps included in a Gates kit, as I have never seen them personally. However, the Gates timing belt is fine. Gates is one of the manufacturers of OEM timing belts for Honda.

IIRC, the parts for the Accord timing belt job I did before our Odysseys was an Aisin kit. As good as any Honda factory parts I've seen. Can't remember if it was from RockAuto.com or ebay.

On the last two Odyssey timing belt jobs, I used Honda factory parts from bernardiparts.com.
