Hello all,

We have owned our 2005 LX since new. After 179,xxx miles the noises going over bumps had me going crazy. The noises seem to have been coming from the front-left area. All parts were ordered from ROCKAUTO.COM and they arrived in two days!!! AMAZING.

I ordered the following:
KYB struts for the front
KYB shocks for the rear
KYB strut mounts for front
MEVOTECH aluminum front lower control arms (for a 2008)

The reason for the Mevotech control arms was two-fold. The main reason was they were cheaper. The second, and more importantly, they are roughly a 6-lbs (each) weight savings over the steel units they replace. This reduction in "un-sprung weight" should really help the suspension perform better.

Replacing the rear shocks was pretty uneventful. There is a 14mm nut and bolt that hold the upper mount and a 17mm nut holding the bottom of the shock to the control arm. Compress the shock and remove. Just that simple.

The front was a little more involved. Three 14mm nuts secure the top of the strut under the wiper cowl (there are three access panels you can remove). Then remove the ABS sensor wire and the 12mm bolt securing the brake line to the bottom of the strut. Additionally, there is a 17mm nut securing the sway-bar end link. Two 22mm bolts/nuts secure the bottom of the strut to the knuckle assembly. Use a spring compressor (carefully) to dismantle the strut assembly.

**NOTE** Make sure that you are aware of the orientation of the top hat (part that touches the top side of spring) and the strut mount (there are FR, LT and RT markings)

The lower control arm was not so bad with two 19mm bolts securing it the sub-frame assembly and one 17mm nut at the lower ball-joint.

Initial impressions are that the van rides great and the noises are no more. I will be taking a 7hr road trip and will report back with how she holds up.

LASTLY, I almost forgot to mention that our van is riding on a set of H&R lowering springs. Not that this changes anything about the install, I simply wanted to let it be known. LOL

I really like the KYB's, but I had to go away from my beloved H&R's only due to where I usually drive (many miles of really bad roads). KYB and H&R are the magic combo with a +1or +2 wheel setup and slightly wider tires...I know!

Getting ready to install the MOOG LCA's and fresh tie rod ends (inner and outer) plus the sway bar bushings. Just the KYB's by themselves made a huge difference.

Great to see they do well on multiple generations of Odysseys!

Is this a DIY job that I could do? As in, does it avoid opening up castle nuts and axles and such? Seems like it from your description. I'll have to research and see if there is a youtube video on this stuff. I can understand unbolting a control arm and rebolting a new one. What I can't visualize is what you do with shocks and struts. I know there are springs involved and people have said you need to be careful with those. I'll need to figure out how to work a spring compressor I guess.....

EDIT: Did you also then need to get an alignment? I just read that a strut is an integral part of the front suspension and affects camber and caster

Hogan773 - Absolutely it is a DIY job. Your local auto parts store has spring compressors you can rent. As a matter of fact, I used one to install my H&R springs. Hand tools will take longer but it's doable. I have an air compressor and air tools, so my install went rather quickly. The alignment is something will have to get re-accomplished for sure.

Thanks guys. My 2010 only has 49K miles so maybe I'll wait until I really start feeling slop.....

right now I sort of feel it while going over some parking lot bumps etc. wondering if maybe that is just sway bar links or something even easier to DIY. I know on my old BMW I had some slop and knock and it went away with new sway bar links.

Hey Scottn3, I just put two strut assemblies on my 06' EXL (RES). I bought the assemblies from the Honda Dealer. They list for $365 or something close to that. I got them for $267/each side. These are genuine Honda Parts OEM. My ride is much improved, but I'm still getting some noise when the struts are loaded (wheels on the ground) and the steering wheel is turned. It's not a whining noise, it's more of an intermittent tick sound. I may need to change my lower control arm. I was under the car and had my wife turning the wheel from side to side. Using my car stethescope it sounded loudest when I touched the metal onto the frame where the lower control arm mounts. If anybody has any suggestions on this one, please e-mail me at Rick.Astillero@gmail.com
