Hi All,

..So my emissions and VSA lights came on in my 2010 Honda odyssey (85K miles). Honda dealership said I had a fouled cylinder 3 spark plug. The fix he said was to replace ALL pistons and piston rings at a cost of $3000 plus tax. Does this sound right ???? Thank you

Just for a fouled spark plug!?
I would like to know what else he saw and what codes it had.
Do you have any type of VCM muzzler? I have a 2008 EX-L that has not fouled any plugs and I have 210,XXX miles. I would change all six plugs, while I'm in there do a compression test, and if that's good, throw a muzzler on it before it too late and you really need rings and pistons.
Just my $0.02! [emoji848]

Which model do you have? If Touring or EX-L I would replace the plugs with the proper NGK ones, add a VCM muzzler and drive it for awhile. You may just have sticking rings from the VCM setup shutting down cylinders. Way too early to jump at replacing the rings without trying a few things.

I added a muzzler to my 07 with 180k on it and oil consumption has dropped significantly.

Thanks.....I am having it looked at another Honda dealership this week for a second opinion !!! They also offered if that is indeed the problem and fix needed to reach out to Honda America and see if they would cover any of it.

Don't look for a "second opinion", just change spark plugs, install VCM Muzzler, and drive for couple thousand miles, see if your plugs get fouled again. I would also use Gumout or B12 Chemtool cleaner a few times. Redline SI1 would be the best.

FWIW, there was a Honda extended warranty for this issue, caused by the VCM (thus the need to "muzzle" the VCM) Your Odyssey is probably beyond the extended warranty period, but you might have some success if you elevate your situation, and plead your case, to Honda corporate.

What are they basing it on? What tests did they do?

Unless they did a compression test...they are guessing. The best test would be a leakdown test.

If they are gonna change the pistons, then they are gonna rebuild the motor. Find out how much is labor. Then look for a long-block.

$4,700 https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=4363806&cc=1444550&jsn=394&jsn=394 $4,700

You could also price a used JDM motor.

I agree, it would be foolish to go w/pistons and rings w/o trying other stuff first...and not knowing how long it takes for the plug to foul.

I would really like to know the outcome?
I have the same issue on a 2010 ody. 105k miles. I've had intermittent check engine light issues for years. Replaced O2 at one point, and another part i can't remember.
I had a flashing CEL kick in and rough driving, pulled over and had to deal with a 40 mile tow and Lyft ride for the whole family. Huge fun I am sure everyone can imagine! I had cylinder 3 misfire and fouled plug with a fair amount of gunk.

I am debating trading in the car for something else. Hopefully not crazy enough for another Honda...

At this time I have replaced the plugs. It was due for that anyway.

Can anyone speak to what's a likely outcome - how long do i have before more fouling if I have not done VCM Muzzler? Do I need a piston ring job and how soon?

My dealer quoted me $2500 (600 in parts and 12 hours labor).

It's unfortunate you did not have a Muzzler device installed; that may have prevented all these issues. Another item for you to factor into your "debate" on trading the Odyssey in or not, is the timign belt. Has this been replaced recently? At 105,000 miles, it is due. Figure about $1,000 for this on top of the $2,500 for piston ring job.

I have the same issue with my 2010 Honda Odyssey EXL. check engine light issues for several years. Replaced spark plugs and Ignition coils. Today, the dealer told me I have to replace piston rings and will cost me $2800. I have 120k miles on the minivan, and serious thinking if I need to trade it. Any suggestions ? Will replacing the piston rings permanently fix the issue ? Dealer also said I am out of extended warranty.

I want to make sure you know that your piston ring issue is likely caused by the VCM feature and that there was a Honda extended warranty to cover this repair. Unfortunately the extended warranty has expired for you. You might want to elevate this to Honda of America and see if they will do anything for you. By all means install a VCM muzzler device. For $100 it would have prevented this problem. Even now, you should still install a muzzler device to prevent future issues.

Check/clean/replace the fouled plugs and add a muzzler. Drive it and it may just clear up. Some have mentioned pouring something into the cylinders to release the sticking rings. I got my van cheap at 180k and it was using oil. I added a muzzler and oil consumption is pretty much gone.

Yep that sounds about right, you must have a VCM system in your odyssey, when your rings are bad and your VCM system engages, a piston a still moving while the spark and fuel are disengaged along with the movement of the valves in that particular cylinder. Since no valves are opening, the compression with the bad rings is allowing oil from the bottom of the engine to rise above the piston which causes a spark plug to foul since its burning the oil. You may have seen smoke coming out of your exhaust as soon as you press the accelerator to get out of the VCM system during cruising.

I am currently in the same situation, so I am curious if you had this done & what was the cost?

Mike, what muzzle did u get ? This just happened to my 2010 oddessy, check engine light on, idle rough, found code for misfire #3, did spark plugs but said the piston rings are dirty.

thanks

I got the original Max Muzzler from user Maxud, it has an adjustable resister. Now he has an electronic one I think that is way smarter.

I know my van is a little newer 2013 Touring Elite, but i just had this same thing happen. Towed to Honda dealership and they replaced piston rings 1-3 and plugs 1-4 for free. Covered it under a service warranty Honda issued due to a class action lawsuit. Honda gave all owners 8 year warranty from the date purchased (new). I made it 167K before mine went.
