If you are routinely on the Cross Bronx Expressway, reliability is at a premium.
QFT.

I'm on GWB twice a day with my '00 which just hit 230K on the original trans. The thought of the trans going into a mortal coil and leaving me stranded has crossed my mind more than once.

If I manage to get 3 more months out of it I just may be crazy enough to replace it once it blows. This van has been with me for 17.5 years - bought it off lease with 38K - helped me build a house and raise three kids. Apart from peeling clear coat and a couple of very minor rust spots, she still looks good and - apart from the trans that is starting to get clunky - runs very well, knock wood.

We got to 327k last June when our Outback had a freak temporary brake failure and smashed Into the rear, bending the D C and B pillars. Bought it in ‘15 from the original owner when the trans went out, but I had it rebuilt because it was originally replaced by Honda right after Honda admitted fault and extended the warranty to 107k. Figured a rebuild by the best shop in Tucson was a better option than some unknown replacement and for 4 years I was right. Probably still am. She still purrs but doesnt hit public roads.
thing is, that original owner spent the entire purchase price in repairs and maintenance over the next 15 years, including that trans. I put 7 grand in myself including the trans rebuild, timing belt/pump, starter, fuel tank, rack and pinion, purchase price and salvage yards.

Wow a lot of high milers here! Have a 2004 purchased new in Feb 2004. 168K miles on it. I just replaced the plugs for the first time...easy job. It was running fine before, but wanted to pull them anyway. The #2 cylinder plug had a little oil on it, but none on the coil. Other plugs looked fine.

Other than BAU maintenance(oil and tranny fluid, brakes, tires) ...including the big 105K mile service..(timing belt and water pump)

1) front struts and both tie rod ends
2) power steering hose, high pressure one
3) pass side front axle
4) batteries, first 2 were POS Honda batteries, last one a AAA battery, latter works great...better battery than oem...

I want to get 3 years out of it before getting something else,

my dealer is great in that the always give me a 15-20% part discounts since I currently own 3 Hondas and have all my work done there...where I live the independent mechanics aren’t materially cheaper.

I see this generation minivan all over the place...they are great cars if you take care of them...

i guess I should add up all the receipts in my folder...divide by 17 and see if I should lease instead...lol

my 2002 ex she is young but old she has 208,000 miles we are 2nd owner of her I am 19 years old we got her 2005 or 2006 just 98,000 miles. I am fighting to keep her in the family but my dad thinks she is a junk he is thinking of trading her in for another ody which is good replacement. i can have her as my first car if I can buy it from my dad.

Had a 2005 Ody with 190k, finally gave up, both rear quarters were rotting out, both doors were not working and the catalytic finally gave up. Traded in for a new insight, gave it to my son. It was sad not driving a van, could put so much stuff in the back, did many construction projects with the boy scouts and many long distance trips

My 04 EX (Odysseus) just turned 252k on the original engine and trans and it still shifts like butter. I'm the second owner and have owned it since February 2015 when it only had 172k and has never left my family stranded. It has made several trips to Myrtle Beach and Daytona Beach from Midwestern Ohio without any issues. When my ex and I split, I gave it to her and signed the title. It developed a couple issues (nothing that effected the drivability) and the local dealership told her a bunch of things were wrong with it that had literally been fixed at another Honda dealership just a year prior. She ended up getting a 2011 Accord and I got stuck with the van again. I was going to just get rid of it, but the more I started to drive it, the more I actually started to enjoy it again. At this point if I were to sell it I wouldn't get anything out of it, and I wouldn't recoup any of the money I'd have to dump into it to make it worth the sale. So I decided to keep it, fix the issues, maybe do some modifying to make it more enjoyable, and just run it into the ground. Even if it no longer serves the purpose of a family hauler, I'd still keep it to haul other things.

'00 LX bought new by my wife's parents March 2000. They gave it to us March of last year. 21 years old this month. Original Transmission, Original Timing Belt, No leaks. "Sal" has the appearance of a 5 year old van - clean inside and out. Will cross over 204,000 miles today. The transmission has a hard time finding 2nd gear, and there's a pronounced ticking sound under the hood. I've put about $1200 in simple maintenance in it in the past year. Occasionally doesn't like to start on the first try, and occasionally sounds like something important is going to vibrate off, but it's the closest thing to a pickup I can afford. Our gen of Ody for sale on a lot around here start at $3500 and go up to $7000. I might seek PSA (prior spousal approval) to try and sell it before I have to put another several hundred or over a $1000 in it.

Husband is kinda bugging me about trading it out but I plan on keeping it til it leaves me on the side of the road. How many miles can you get on one of these? We replaced the transmission at 180K and so far all good. Is there any reason to get rid of a van that seems to be still going strong just because of the mileage?
If it's reliable, there's no reason to get rid of it until there's a major expense. Wish I could keep mine but it was too big for the narrow streets I have to drive through regularly.

Mine had almost 240k (since new; MY02) before it got rear ended while parked. Out of those 18years of ownership, besides transmissions (65k & 116k) and the normal wear and tear items (tires, brakes, batteries), the vehicle never had any other issues. Around 220 when the vehicle started had some leaks on the oil pan. Other than that fluids were replaced regularly (oil change ever 5k - synthetic; brake fluids every 60k), everything else worked. I was going to keep it until the very end but too bad some a hole rear ended it and considered totaled afterwards.... what a sad story imo.

That's a problem we all face with these old cars -- Insurance Co. can "total it" for a fraction of worth. My buddy was rear-ended in his '03 Acura TL, a real cream puff, never driven in the snow, and they gave him next to nothing for it.
