Torn Control Arm Bushing, 2018 EX 80k miles

My 2018 EX Odyssey Van was in for a regular oil change and brake fluid flush when the tech discovered this issue.
Both front lower control arm bushings are bad. One is totally open and the other shows to be badly deteriorating. See Pictures. Recommended fix is expensive control arm replacement.

Has any one else had this issue? What was your repair & cost?

We are retired couple with single vehicle and it gets about 30% highway miles. The rest are pretty good city streets. Purchased new February 2018, never been driven in snow, ice or sand.

I'd consider control items to be a wear item like brake pads. I have probably replaced at least half-dozen of these on my vehicles over the years.

There is nothing scientific or complicated to replace these. Feel free to take it to a trusted independent mechanic if you don't like the dealership prices.

They do not need to be immediately replaced because of a torn boot. I'd put it on my list of things to do in the next 30k miles.

Agreed it’s a wear item and very common on certain vehicles. I had to have some replaced on a Land Rover around 70,000 miles.

Have you noticed any “clunking” noise when driving over uneven surfaces? I’d call around to various shops and dealers and find the best price.

No, I am not getting any unusual suspension noises, but I will be listening for them now that I know a problem could be developing. I like Bandit400 suggestion, next 30k miles.

Just got the same message from our mechanic. Cost for replacement of both arms is $990. Our Odyssey is at 45K miles. I asked why this premature wear and he said it MIGHT be from towing our pop-up camper (we have Timbren supports in the rear), but it's also just as likely to be a function of rough driving over Atlanta's potholes and speed bumps. FWIW, I can feel this damage when I'm driving. I'm getting the repair done. I am concerned I had to do it so early in the life of this vehicle.

It is very common on any of the newer vehicles that use the molded rubber bushings. It is not going to be an immanent failure but eventually your alignment will be off. This had been the case with tons of BMW's all the way back to the early 2000's. Replace it when you can but don't stress about it. Our 2013 Infinity had it happen at about 70,000 miles and the dealer wasn't even going to offer to do it until the 100,000 mile service.

Brand new complete control arms are $110 ea on Rock Auto for these vans.
