Hello, everyone.
I've 2002 Ody with 251000 miles.
Problem - hunting idle and, now, high idle.
I checked all vacuum hoses, except two that go from junction of upper radiator hose to engine. These tow lead towards front of engine and run under the intake manifold.
I checked power steering switch wires and fixed them.
I plugged/unplugged MAP with running engine - it seems ok. Power to this sensor is ok.
Then, I suspected an Idle Air control valve. I cleaned it 2 years ago (because of error code).
There is no information in repair manuals (available for mere mortals) about how to test this valve and it's normal operation and its specs.
My tests are:
712Ohm between center pin and right one (looking at valve from connector side locking tab up).
The rotating "throttle" inside (within outermost cavity, which is the closest to intake manifold) doesn't close completely after I turn on and off ignition switch. This cavity is half open (or closed).
I don't know if this is a normal gap.
I don't know if the Ohm reading is correct, either.
If this valve within the specs and operats as it should, I don't want to buy a replacement.
I couldn't find any other sources of air/vacuum leak when I sprayed carb cleaner on all possible gaskets/hoses/connections.
The intake manifold was never removed by me.
Prior to this (hunting idle and high idle) the car ran fine and was parked for a few months.
let me know what your experience is with this type of situation and possible ways to fix it.
Thanks in advance.

I had idle surging and a Honda mechanic suggested I first try to clean the IAC valve. His instructions were to remove it, clean thoroughly with carb cleaner, spray with wd-40, pat dry. Works perfectly. I never did find out what his 2nd or 3rd suggestions were.

To test the IACV when the engine is idling high:
While idling and fully warmed up, cover the IACV intake port inside the throttle body. If the idle slows, the IACV is excessively open.

That could be due to binding of the mechanism, which would be fixed by cleaning. Less common, it could be a control problem; further diagnosis would be needed.

Pixburd54:
Thank you for this suggestion especially about lubricating with wd-40.
It worked!!! the AIC valve's internal "throttle" is now closing completely.
The idle is now normal.
Conclusion:
clean the AIC valve very, VERY thoroughly and lubricate it lightly.
Thank you all for your support!!!

Glad to hear it! The IAC valve lies directly below the throttle, so any contamination, like when cleaning the throttle in my case, falls into the IACV, and clogs it up.

In my case the idle was just crazy, cycling between 800 and 2500 rpm. I thought I killed the engine. Then a friend of a friend, who is a Honda service manager, told me this secret. Most mechanics and dealers just change out the IACV with new, since there's no money in giving out free advice.

Buffalo4:
you're welcome. The results MUST be posted.
Note to others (all):
Long time ago (rather once upon a time) I knew that Chilton's repair manuals were good, thorough and with good pictures.
Now the manuals by Chilton is just another garbage. That sucks. I recently bought Chilton's repair manual for 2002 Ody in hope that it will have good troubleshooting section and wiring diagrams.
Troubleshooting section is a joke, wiring diagrams don't cover all wires...
Yesterday I look at the first page of this manual and saw that Chilton's was bought by Heynes (even worse repair manual than Chiltons).
$%^&*&%$ was my first word.

You can usually find a Honda Service Manual online in pdf form normally. The one I got was a 1999-2004 Odyssey Service Manual titled 99-04_Odyssey.pdf.
I bought it years ago for under $20 but I don't know today's prices. You might do some searching and get lucky.

PS: Also be aware of scams etc!! :mad:o_O

Still true. The FSM is still there for the 99-04 as a pdf. In www search it will be bottom half of results on page 1. We cant put a link there (not allowed) so do search and save it locally.
