Every J series in existence has had the exact same placement of the oil cap. I'm not sure where the hell you are putting the oil cap to be consistently dropping it but I have never dropped an oil cap on any engine, ever, including 2 different J series motors.
Again, there are two points I tried to make, first dropping the Cap, second adding Oil!

From the owners manual:

We recommend that you check the engine oil level every time you refuel.
Park the vehicle on level ground.
Wait approximately three minutes after turning the engine off before you check the oil.
1. Remove the dipstick (orange).
2. Wipe the dipstick with a clean cloth or
paper towel.
3. Insert the dipstick back all the way into its
hole.
4. Remove the dipstick again, and check the level. It should be between the upper and lower marks. Add oil if necessary.
You are 100% correct!

Why have you needed to add oil to a brand new van? Are you having oil burning issues?
Unfortunately, per Honda, if you burn 1 qt oil in about 5K miles, that amount of oil consumption is "normal". Ahem.

Even 1 quart in 1k is considered normal. I know this from when I tried to get them to cover my old Accord under the warranty extension.

I've burned my hand once when pulling off the oil cap, so I see where you're coming from. My main concern with you using twine is how hot the engine bay gets during the summer with these J series; you'll feel the heat radiating off of the closed hood in a couple of months and see the heat haze (wavy air) coming off of the hood after having the engine run for a while. I could be paranoid, but It's something to think about. I wonder if you could put something together with safety wire or a chain connected to a swiveling snap hook (similar to the one you use on key chains).

What's your oil change interval like? We've never had to top our oil off on our 2019, but that's partly due to our maintenance minder popping up every 3k-4k miles.

I'm sympathetic with the OP and agree the oil cap access is not great due to the "beauty shroud" design and frame cross member, plus the grip ears are very short...

...I also agree with the posts that a standard "locking funnel" cannot be used on Odyssey because the oil fill is deep & angled, forcing use of the "long" funnel (or big risk of shorter funnel popping out of hole)...

...I also credit OP for innovation to help avoid dropped or lost oil cap!

Just imagine how you would feel, if for example during travel, you wanted add oil and the cap fell into or under the engine at night (or worse, down a drain grate)...!

I'm surprised there's not an accessory such as a taller oil cap with better gripping surfaces and/or an "extender" to move oil cap higher (so standard, grip-lock funnel could be used), or oil cap with swiveling lanyard...!

We have 8500 miles and this is the first LOF. I assume this is going to be the interval, give or take.

They say normal as your investment destroys itself. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Those numbers are child's play. I had a VW TDI that the owners manual said that it was "normal" to use/burn up to a quart of oil every 1,200 miles... 🤦‍♂️ And to top it off, it had a 9k mile oil change interval. At that loss rate, I'd have already replaced the oil more than once every 9k miles. 😆

Thankfully mine wasn't that bad, but I still had to add about 3 quarts every 9k miles.

You joke, but I actually used this excuse once or twice with my old Accord. Was adding a quart every 1k, I figure by 5k I've added 5 new quarts of oil, might as well skip an OCI here and there.
