I replaced the failed AC clutch coil on our 2010 Touring and need to set the clutch air gap. The kit came with two .020" thick washer/shims and the old washer/shims were .052" thick each. Using the thin shims from the kit leaves no air gap and a search of the archives did not turn up a gap spec. Can someone please tell me what the AC clutch air gap should be?

BTW, those snap rings are a real pita with the compressor in place. Took me two days before I finally ground down the tips of a pair of Harbor Freight 15 degree angle long needle nose pliers to reach into the old coil snap ring holes and again to reinstall the new snap ring. Good thing no one was around the garage to hear me.

The proper clearance is .35 to .60 mm or .014 to .024 inches.
OK, thanks for the info. I was guessing .025" but .014" to .024" is what I'll aim for. Thanks again.

EDIT: with the two pairs of shim washers I had (.052" original and .020" in the clutch kit) I ended up using one .052" shim and two .020" shims giving a .017" air gap. Pretty close to the mid range. Now to get the darn belt back on and see if I have AC.

This is one of those jobs that always messes with my head. For some reason I always think (100% incorrectly) "use more shims (thicker stack of shims) to reduce that air gap..." (this is wrong)

It's 100% the other way around, i.e., fewer shims (thinner stack of shims) to reduce the air gap.

If it weren't for a detailed shop manual, I would screw this up every time.

That's why I refer to them as spacers (if I'm thinking clearly at the moment).
