Check engine light just came on yesterday with the TCS light, turn off the car and now just the check engine light comes on. TOok it to Checker and pulled the code PO740. I did search and it doesn't look good. Pissed because I have just had this thing for a week. A 99 with 135k on it. I did a search and if I need a new tranny I will see if they can do the "goodwill" move for me. I have an independant place looking at it first though. Is that worth it or is the code always a sign the tranny is going? Have there ever been a case when it was something simple and cheap??? Van seems to run good still. Thanks so much, please pray for me!!!

Got this from another Honda site:

"If the only code you have is P0740 (which is for a faulty lock up system in the transmission) you might be able to fix it for less money. First what you can do is replace the lockup control solenoid valve assembly (you most likely have to get this part from a dealer!) It is probably going to be cheaper than a whole tranny, but it might not correct the problem and if after replacing that part and the code p0740 returns then it means there is an internal failure in the transmission you are going to need to replace the tranny."

I also see a failing tranny can cause the solenoid to go bad - so replacing it might be a temporary fix even if the solenoid is bad.

It is pretty easy to clear codes to sell a car - so the prior seller likely knew there was something causing the CEL to come on even if they did not know it was tranny related.

Options are to talk to a dealer to see if you can work a deal on splitting cost - since you have no history with the dealer on this car that might be a tough sell unless the dealer is really bending over backward. I would at least see if the dealer can look up if the tranny was replaced by Honda (the replacement has a 12 month/12,000 mile warrenty) - worth a shot. Many have seen quick failures on replacement trannys.

Taking it to a transmission shop is an option but they likely will go off the code like the dealer - digging into the transmission is expensive since they have to pull it out of you car even if they can fix it without a full replacement.

Yup, just got it back from my local machanic, tranny is going out. Tomorrow I will head into the dealership and talk nice and see what I can get. I will print off some threads here about other members with 130k miles getting new tranny's, anything else I should say/do? Wish me luck...

Make sure ATF cooler, lines and hoses are cleaned of old ATF and gunk, an in-line ATF filter installed in the return line and an alignment is done. Good luck.

Just got back from the Dealership, they can't take a look at it until tomorrow. The fluid is good, full, etc.

UPDATE:

Dealer confirmed it needs a new tranny. I called Honda and they will get back to me by Tuesday as to their answer on a "goodwill". Dealer quoated me a price of $2300.

I am going to push them hard on this, my 1995 Accord needs replacing soon and I am sure they won't want me going down the road to the Toyota dealer...

I was at my independent Toyota garage this week and noticed half a case of Z-1 ATF on his shelf. I'd never seen a Honda at his shop so I asked about the Z-1. Seems that a few of his Toyota customer also own Hondas, so he works on their Hondas also. The punchline is that he had just replaced a 99 Ody tranny and billed that customer $1650.

If my 01 Ody needed a tranny, I'd get it quoted at my independent Honda garage first and then go see what the dealer would do.

Honda is not stepping up. I have to pay $2295 for a new "rebuilt" tranny with 12k/1yr warantee. I talked to about 4 people at Honda, but the issue was that my Odyssey is a Canadain one (we are only an hour from the boarder) and American Honda has no control over Canadan Honda. C.H. said that once a car is brought into the US that voids everything from their perspective, even the factory warantee if it were a new van.

My dealer claimed to try and call to put in a good word for me. I just told my dealer that I am not mad at them (don't want to piss them off, as they are still working on my van!) but really disapointed in Honda. I told them that when my Accord retires this fall I am going to take it to the Toyota dealership, and check out the Camery. Same for my Odyssey in 3 years - for a Sienna. I was bluffing ofcourse, as when the time comes I will check out Toyota, but will go with the best deal, etc. But I wanted to let the Honda dealer know I wasn't happy.

that sucks. Have you tried to work with Honda on getting a longer warranty on the "new" tranny? I think that would be very important, especially if you are planning to keep the van for 3 more years.
There is the very real possibility it might not last much past 12k miles :ahh:

Correct, I didn't purchase this van from the dealer. We just moved to town 2 weeks ago. I tried to stress that if the dealer could step up to the plate here they could get my repete business for years to come but they didn't seem to get my hint. I am going to see about having them extend the warantee to 3yrs though. The service guy says they have never had a tranny come back after they replaced it.

$30. for a carfax report must be looking pretty good about now.

Oh, and just a heads up for newbies and lurkers. Don't freak out if the sticker on the driver's door says made in Canada. All Odys were made in Canada for awhile. Only a VIN check at:

https://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/login.asp?page=/prod_home.asp

will confirm the van was made for the U.S. market.
Carfax wouldn't really have done me any good, I still would have bought the van. I pulled the report and it didn't show anything wrong, only that it is Canadian. Normally that isn't a big deal with a can with as many miles as this has on it. Oh well, hopefully once I get everything fixed it will last me a long, long time.

We have been dealing with gray market vans for a while around here. It's good that you can be so accepting. Imagine how some folks have felt when their vans were young, well within mileage for the extended warranty that applied to both the U.S. and Canadian vans, only to be told "sorry"

Ya, one thing I have learned in my short life is that it is only money and you can't take it with you when your time is up. I by no means am a wealthy man, but compared to the rest of the world I am in the top 95% :D :D :D
