Hi all,

Newbe here looking at a 2003 Odyssey. I tried to do a search, but didn't find the results I'm looking for.

What at the basic advantages of an EX vs. LX?

Also, EXL vs EX.

Thanks,
Neil:)

EXL is the EX with leather. All else is here at Edmunds (good resource) . . .

IMHO, the LX advantage is less stuff to break and lower cost. Works for me b/c I will bought my Ody new and will drive the wheels off of it. Also, didn't feel the need for a warranty as most EX owners do.

If you are looking to buy any used Ody, the LX will be harder to find.

The differences between the EX and the LX are mostly cosmetic and conveniences: alloy wheels, colour-coded mirrors and trim, power sliding doors, automatic climate control, steering-wheel mounted radio controls, standard keyless remote and security system, power driver's seat and CD player.

The LX is slightly lighter than the EX. It also has manual doors, so there are no auto door glitches or issues with the brushes/sensors, which comprised the bulk of the complaints on the MSN Auto website before getting my '04. The only things I miss now (compared to my 2005 TL) are the auto climate control and stereo buttons on the steering wheel.

I see far fewer LXs than EXs- maybe a 1/5 ratio- here in the Los Angeles area.

LX manual sliding doors do have a problem with sticking doors. The door gaskets stick to the body. Sometimes grease helps, or separating the gasket from the body with your finger at the top front corner or pushing doors open from inside. Do not pull hard from outside, the handle breaks. Should have been fixed with new gaskets, but new ones stick also.

I have both an LX and an EX. the LX is an 03 we bought new as affordability was an issue and all the talk around here about automatic door problems had me apprehensive. A couple of years later, my Mazda van died (ironically the transmission) and I went looking for a used Ody. Well, LXs are hard to find. (I actually did find a couple, but both had so few miles that they wanted more than I could have bought a new one for three months earlier. The 05 redesign was just out and no budge on prices from dealers on those) So I got an EX. I have had no problems with the doors. and with this place at my disposal, I'll be able to fix them in any case. There are some small items that make an EX worth it. Like the interior lights shutting off automatically. I like that the center storage box is lit. But the big item is the doors. The first time you come up to the van with your hands full and manage to hit the unlock and then the door open buttons, you will be glad you forked. EX-L? I don't like leather seats much. It's hot here and I wear shorts. and I can't stand slipping around on them. And they are mostly vinyl. (does anyone else remember when vinyl interior was the cheap car and cloth the luxury one?) Only the seating surfaces are leather. But that's just personal taste. If one wanted RES or NAV you had to get leather (you still do) However, in 04 there were some cloth EX models available with RES. Honda needed to use up some parts.

If you have small kids, leather is the way to go. The first time you have to remove some sticky-gooey foodstuff from the seat you'll understand.
Egads; I like the feel of leather against my skin. Is this abnormal? Should I seek therapy?:D
My Alfa has vinyl seats. They suck when it's hot. Leather is not like that at all IMO.

Leather more like "that ", than cloth is. :D

Me! '67 Plymouth Valiant - - all vinyl interior including bench seat and floor. No radio. The only "feature" was the heater.

Congrats on your success regardless of how narrow you may choose to define it. :D

From a Taurus to an Ody! Life is good. Enjoy!

No matter what model or year Ody you buy, make sure you take the van to Alternative Solution Car Care on Mayfield Road in Cleveland Heights. I moved from South Euclid to Bay a few years ago and STILL drive the Odyssey to Alternative for minor and major services.

Tim and Tom Weeks do excellent work at about 1/2 the dealer price. I recommend them to everyone I know that has Hondas, Toyotas or Nissans. I haven't been to a Honda dealer service department (except for warranty work) since 2000.

Good luck!

LX has

black door handles and mirrors
plastic hubcaps
manual doors
manual climate control (for which I'd pay extra!)
manual drivers seat
no tray under passenger seat
no interior power cutoff feature
no "heat rejecting glass" (whatever THAT means)

IIRC it was a couple thousand dollars less than an EX in Sept '02 when we bought. EX and up just coming down from the OVER-MSRP mania that plagued the early Odysseys.

No regrets. I did break a door handle due to the sticky gasket issue. $65 fix. DIY.

Thanks for the great tip Cincyfan. They are only 5 miles from my house. We really like the new to us Ody.:D

Alternative will keep it running for many years to come...and at a reasonable price.

Congratulations.
