I have 95K miles on my '03 and for the last year at least, the front seat belts won't return to their parked position without carefully straightening the belts and guiding them back into the slot toward the reel. Has anyone had this problem and gone to the trouble to fix it? I don't want to take the car apart, but it is slightly aggravating to have the seatbelts flopping all over the place when you get out of the car.

I've never torn into a seatbelt retractor assembly, but I'll wager it is a non-repairable part. Honda probably doesn't want you in there on a so seriously safety oriented part.

That said, have you carefully cleaned the belt, maybe sent a spritz of silicone into the retractor with the belt fully extended?

I've been told, read, or heard that Honda has a life time warranty on the restraint systems.

Of course your dealer will deny that is true, so your going to have to do some checking on your own.;)

I had the same problem on my 2002 EX. Notified the dealer about the problem during the last oil change @75k. Dealer arranged to have me come in last week to replace both front seat belt retractors, free of charge.

I'd say go to the dealer and have them look at the seatbelts.

On another vehicle, I went into it far enough to tighten the spring by taking another wrap around with the belt. It did not help the retraction and just made the belt tighter when worn.

In some cases, improvement may result from cleaning the belt guide on the door post. Cleaning the belt itself can also help. I pull it all the way out and don't let it retract. Then have a small bucket of warm water with a very little bit of Dawn and put in the seat. Dunk the belt and wash. Rinse in a similar fashion.

Lifetime warranty on the seatbelts in the USA. In Canada, its the 5-year 100,000 km warranty. I had the driver's replaced for free after mentioning that it was slow to retract. Suggest you try the same. Like night and day operation now.

I also had this problem with the front drivers side belt. Took it in and had it replaced, no questions asked. This was just before my three year anniversary but I am under the impression that it is now 5 years.

Its a safety item so they don't hassle you about it.

My understanding is that there are no owner servicable parts. Have them fix it.

Our replacement/fixed unit is now slowing down again. It seems to be aggrevated by my wife and how she seems to twist it as she takes it off. It can't retract cleanly and this might be stressing the mechanism.

No problems when I use it but I guide it back by hand when I get out. I am NOT bringing this little observation up with my wife though!

We had this problem with the driver's belt. We took it in to the dealer and they told us it was just twisted under the cover. After straightening it out (which apparently someone who knows how can do without disassembling anything) it worked fine. No need to replace anything.

weak seat belt retractor

Thanks for the suggestions. When I go in for timing belt replacement soon, I'll see if they can fix the belt retractors too. If they don't help me I'll do the cleaning exercise. The belts don't look dirty to me but maybe a little silicone in there would help too.

slow seatbelt retractor

Have the same problem. 2001 LX. Seatbelt very slow to retract. Unless I feed it in, or shake the belt as it retracts, it will not retract. Tried cleaning the belt "holder". It helped very slightly.

Took the van to the dealer. As espected, he said this is normal and not covered. It this a common problem? Has anyone found a real solution?

seatbelt

The CSR at the Dealership said as long as the seat belt "works", they will not fix. A "slow" seatbelt works. Just extremely frustrating.

My old Ford Bronco, even had "supper seat belts", would "fly"back to retract.

Anyways, if there was a Factory lifetime warranty, wouldn't the Dealership know about it?

Honda seat belts are warranted for the life of the vehicle. See a dealer. (but not Wild Willy's)
I am going to...when it warms up...I don;t what the tell me they are just cold

my 2000 ody is slow at retracting...I do the same thing as most others have mentioned..when i take it off I just guide it in a little. Just so the belt won't get caught in the door when I close it. Other than that it works fine. Just a minor thing I can live with.

But one thing, I bought the van used and I have no warranty, will my local Honda dealer fix the seat belt?

Part of the retract problem (in some cases) is not the spring return mechanism. I though we were having the same problem. The seat belt retainer that is located on the door post (the thing the belt goes through before disappearing behind the plastic) was our problem. I cleaned it real good and buffed it with a strip of find sandpaper. Then, I sprayed it with silicone spray (top and bottom). I also sprayed the seat belt itself. After that…I no longer had to hand feed the belt through the retainer. Slip and slide!

I have used this method many times in the past on different vehicles and have never had any ill effects from doing this. Hope it helps!
