Hi, there, I need your help, pleae help me!

I bought honda odyssey 2002 4 months ago and it had several problems. Anyway my mechanic fixed all problems except one and I paid around $1,500 already.

When I stopped my car during driving, sometimes idle state was very rough even though there was no RPM variation. Engine stalled 2 times. I cleaned throttle body and I could see little improvement there. After then engine has never stalled till now but rough idle is same. My mechanic has tried to find out for 2 weeks but failed. I received some report from him. He said the only possibility is ECU change but it will cost over $2,000. Mechanic report is as belows;
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Problem : Engine is running rough at idle, sometimes stalling.

What I have tried to fix the problem.

Step 1 : Basic inspections and services
1. Air intake System : Checked and Cleaned
Cleaned the throttle body and checked : Still Same
Cleaned the ISC valve and checked : Still Same
Cleaned the air intake system including throttle body, ISC,
intake manifold and intake valves. : Still Same
Checked for any vacuum leakage : no leakages found.
2. Engine ECU : Checked for fault codes.
Scan the engine ECU for any fault codes : No fault codes found.
Reset the ECU with the scanner and road tested : Still Same
Reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery and road tested :
Still Same
3. Ignition system : Checked and replaced the worn parts.
Replaced the ignition lead set : Still had the original parts from
the factory ( 110,00Km 7 years old)
Replaced the spark plugs : 30,000Km driven since last
replacement.
Removed the distributor and cleaned the cap and rotor
button : they were bit dirty but not too bad
No free play for the distributor shaft.

Step 2 : The pattern of symptom.
1. Checked the pattern of the problem on various engine
conditions and driving conditions.
Found the engine idle is O.K. at cold and during the warm up
period.
Even after the warm up, the idle is O.K. (Checked the engine
without driving ).
Checked the engine idle after several stall tests ( a simulation
for running the engine with loads)
The idle is still smooth.
2. After driving on the road for about 15 Minutes, the symptom
starts showing up.
While driving on hills, accelerating, or cruising, the engine is
very smooth. No problems at all.
When the symptoms start showing up, the idle at P, R, N, D is
rough.
The symptom feels like intermittent misfiring like spark plug
lead is worn : but the spark plugs and leads are O.K.
We turned off the engine and restarted in few seconds, and
the symptoms is still on.
We turned off the engine and restarted in 5 minutes, and the
symptoms is disappearing.
and if the we drive around the block again, the symptom
comes back.

Step 3 : Diagnose by monitoring the data on the engine ECU
with scanner.
IAC (Idle Air Command) : 39 43 13 24
Fuel injector (m Sec) 3.01 3.4 2.82 3.24
Spark Advance : Âş BTDC
12 12 10 ~ -10 10 ~ -10
Idle RPM : 700 630 700 630
ECT (Engine coolant Temperature) ÂşC
79 91 91 91
MAP Sensor 1.5 1.43 2 2

Applied a feeler gauge on the throttle body stopper.
and tried the TPS sensor position from 9.5 - 10.3 - 10.5 -
11.7 ;
Found even with high idle rpm the symptom is still same.
Found the Spark advance (Ignition timing) is fluctuating when
the symptom is there.
Checked the ignition timing : The timing mark is moving
between 10BTDC and 10ATDC.
Checked the ignition timing for #1, #2, #3 ,#4 : The timing
mark is moving between 10BTDC and 10ATDC.
Found the MAP sensor which is the prime value for the Spark
advance become 2 volts
Check the MAP sensor power supply (4.9 Volt) and No
problems on the earth circuit.
Check the MAP sensor output with engine off and ignition
on : 2,85 Volts : O.K.
Replaced the MAP sensor with 2nd hand unit : Checked :
Found still same!

Further diagnose and repair required.
1. Need 2nd or 3rd Opinions : Other repairer or Mechanic
2. Need to find a similar cases on the same Odyssey.
3. May need new engine ECU but we need some more evidence before trying to buy the part.

I wonder where he found the distributer in a 2001 Odyssey?
Take it to a dealer with a mechanic trained to work on it.

Location: Sydney - Australia? Not the North American 3.5L V6 Odyssey?

I'd almost put money on it being the ECT sensor. However, the preculiar thing is, is that the ECU should had thrown a code for it.

ECT = engine coolant temp. Sensor should be right on the thermostat housing. Easy to access.

I've had this problem you're describing, but not with my Odyssey.

The thermostat would register the engine had warmed up, but the ECT sensor was defunct and evidently not completing a proper circuit.

So whenever I was idle for any reason the engine would try and stall out, and run just horrid.

But as long as I was cruising around up and down the road everything was perfect.

For a while until I figured the problem out I had to keep my foot on the gas even at the lights in neutral to keep the car from shaking apart.

But ... a CEL should had been thrown for you to investigate this.

--> I'm sorry, I missed. My odyssey is 2002. I edited mistyping in my original thread. And I found another fact. When idling is unstable, if I turn on air-conditioner, engine RPM increases by 50~100 and idling become stable. OR when I turn wheel left or right slightly, idle RPM go up a little bit (about 50) and it become better. Is it common situation in all HONDA Odyssey?

Thanks for every replier.
Finally I fixed my problem in Honda Service Centre. Just before I arrived at Honda Centre engine check signal ramp was ON and the error code was about EGR valve, so Honda engineer fixed easily. Now my oddy is in very good condition and I'm enjoying driving everyday.

Glad to hear you got it fixed.
