Hey guys,

I need some help... I recently attempted to replace the factory speakers in my '04 Oddysey (with factory video system).

I installed the following:

Front door speakers:
(2) Focal RSE-130 [5 1/4"] speakers
NOTE: These are component speakers (woofer/tweeter separate). I installed the woofer only in each door.

Front tweeters:
....Couldn't get the grills off, so I left the factory tweeters in place. I have the Focal crossover & tweeters that are still in the box (the Focal RSE-130 Component speakers)

Rear speakers:
(2) JBL Club 5020 [5 1/4"] speakers
NOTE: These are 2-way speakers (woofer/tweeter)

Receiver:
JVC KW-R8925BTS

Now, here are my questions...

1) Is there a crossover between the front dash tweeters and the front door speakers? or is it just a Y split from the receiver (full-range sent to door speaker and dash tweeter)?

2) Is the front door speaker supposed to be JUST a woofer (part of a component system), or a two-way speaker w/ a tweeter? I saw someone post that they installed a two-way speaker in their doors...

3) Does anyone know what Impedence the factory speakers are/were? I stupidly threw mine away when I pulled them out of my car.

4) Regarding the Impedence...Are the speakers I bought going to work?? The Crutchfield guy told me the JBL's are 3 Ohm speakers & the Focals are 4 Ohm speakers. I still have the factory radio (uninstalled) & it has a 4 Ohm symbol on the top near the serial number...but it's unclear if it's referencing the audio amp or if that's regarding something else. Here's the info for the JVC I installed:
  • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
  • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)
5) How the heck do you get the dash tweeter grills off? I tried everything...Could not get anything under the edge to pry them off. I'm a relatively handy person. Any secret to that?

6) This is the big question...The one that ties everything together... When I installed all of the above (leaving the factory tweeters and using the Focal woofers in the doors), it sounded HORRIBLE. The Focals are WAY quieter than the factory speakers were...So the tweeters get loud a lot faster than the woofers, causing the balance to be wretched between the tweeters & woofers... Unlistenable....Which leads me to believe the factory tweeters & woofers were 2 Ohm speakers.

BUT why would they be 2 Ohm speakers if the Factory receiver had a 4 Ohm amplifier?? Were they just spec'd like that by someone at Honda who knew nothing about matching impedence between a speaker & amplifier??

7) SO, if I figure out how to get the tweeter grills off & install the correct matching Focal tweeters, how to I install the crossovers? Where do I look for where the wire splits from the receiver? I need a series of pictures or a video. I know it's supposed to be inside the "Under Dash Fuse/Relay Box", but I only know where that is on the passenger side...And I don't know how to get into it to change the wiring.

Anyways, I haven't had any sleep for weeks because this has been so frustrating to figure out. I've scoured the forums and I haven't found any answers to these questions. I've called Honda several times and they haven't been able to answer any of them...Praying someone else on here knows something about audio that can help.

MANY THANKS. PLEASE HELP ME :)

Jake

I'm probably not gonna be much help but I'll try.

I have a 2004 EX/RES, factory dvd, headunit plays dual-zones, built in tape & CD, has plug on back for CD changer.

When I bought it in 2008 I swapped the 2 front door speakers and 2 rear panel speakers right off the bat. All 4 stock speakers that I took out were the same, 4ohm, 20W.

I put in some Sony 6-1/2" 4-ways that are 4ohm.

Huge improvement.

IIRC I had to dremel part of the plastic inner front door panels to provide room for the bigger magnets but size-wise they fit just fine, used stock grilles too. The ones in the rear panels I think all I had to do was drill a couple mounting holes, they fit behind the stock grilles too.

I didn't mess with the 2 factory tweeters by the windshield, also as far as I know those are the only tweeters, none in the rear. IIRC I did pry up the grills and take one of them out to look at. Seems like there was a little relief in the side of the grill that I was able to get a small screwdriver in. However that has been quite a few years and I may be mistaken.

I also bought a bluetooth adapter that plugged into the CD changer port on the back of the headunit.

For installing the crossovers I think you are just going to have to splice them into the wires leading to the tweeters. Personally I would steer clear of screwing with stuff in the fuse boxes.

Also that picture you have in your post looks like it is from the electrical troubleshooting manual. If you paste this link into IE browser http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/EM/OD9904/OD9904Content.pdf when you go to the page shown in the picture in your post, the blue lettering are links to pictures to show where stuff is located. BTW I could only get it to work in IE, no other browsers seemed to work.

I partially swapped out the speakers in my 2004 ody with RES. I put the front speakers into the rear location, and replaced the front speakers with Pioneer TS-A1676R 6.5-Inch 3-Way Speakers. The front stock speakers appear to be polypropylene while the rear stock speakers are paper, and the fronts and rears are identical size.. I first replaced the fronts with the Pioneers, and did not notice a major difference, but putting the front speakers into the rear made a very noticeable difference. the stock front is blue and the stock rear is black

A couple years back my bluetooth adapter quit working, I suspect it was something in the head unit that actually failed. Then not long after the CD player quit working.

So I put in a Pioneer AVH-X3600BHS DVD Receiver. I put a set of Alpine SPR-60C 6-1/2" Component speakers in the front, and another set in the rear. Pushing them with a Rockford Fosgate R400-4D amplifier. I mounted the front tweeters in pods on the front pillars and mounted the rear tweeters in pods on the rear pillars. Ran new wire for everything.

I also have a RF P3-2X10 box with an R1200-1D amp pushing it. I mounted this so that I can easily take it out if I need the cargo space. The ody alternator stuggles to keep up when I'm pushing this hard so I added a 2 Farad capacitor, which helps a little but not much. I really need to upgrade the alternator but I'm not interested in dropping the cash to do it.

It is miles better than the factory setup, but it still isn't what I would consider a quality system, mainly because I pieced it together with budget stuff I found on sale.

I also wish I would have stripped the interior and dynamatted everything. The amount of factory soundproofing in this thing is pathetic.

It is pretty nice to be able to drive on the highway with the windows down and still hear the stereo.

ctsu,

I am not sure they will fit. The Rockford Fosgate speakers are 2 1/4" deep from the flange. The pioneers I put in are 1 3/4" deep. I would remove one speaker and see if you have enough room to put in those RF speakers.

Also check this thread where several post mention shallow speakers are needed.

I purchased the new version of those - also 1 3/4" deep:

OP,

did you ever get the sound resolved?

I was looking at the wiring diagram, and in my LIMITED knowledge, I believe the component speakers are wired in parallel, so they are perhaps 8ohms each so that final resistance would be 4ohms???
If the factory door mid and dash tweet are wired in series normally, the tweet could be less than 4ohms. When wired in series with the (potentially) 8ohm bass speaker, epsecially if the components are less sensitive than the OE stuff, then it makes sense that the tweets get all the power and blast out the bass units.

Here is my personal agony:
I have an '00, so I have 6.5" up front with the dash tweets and 4" rears. I inherited OEM speakers and a circa '01 Alpine deck. It sounded not-so-fresh, so I got inspired to change it up. 6.5" Pioneer shallow mount up front actually made it worse, but the 4" X-Bass Sonys in the rear are flippin' awesome. They sound big, so I got a pair of 6.5" X-Bass for the front, with marginal improvement. The Alpine died, so I got a decently-optioned Kenwood, which hasn't cleaned up the issues at all. Basically, I have what I believe is too much midrange up front. The tweets seem to be barely there, but the Sonys, being so far down by the shin, create poor imaging, where at lower volume, one can't really even hear the near channel, especially if its the driver and the passenger seat is empty. I wish I could get the same sound quality up front as in the rears (the kids don't even care, so it could sound like a tin cup and yarn for all they care)
I am not trying to hijack the thread, so I hope it doesn't appear that way, and if it does, just disregard the immediately above.

Thank you, crutchfield and even searching on this forum haven't turned up anything concrete, there's so much conflicting info about what the EXACT speaker sizes are for the fronts and backs. this is the first time hearing something concrete, thank you!

also if the mounting depth of over 1.75" is too deep, I think you can simply drill or cut out the plastic behind it. nothing should stop you from putting basically any speaker you want in any location. probably could fit a 10" speaker in the front with a dremel if you REALLY felt like it
