1st Gen Cargo Dimensions - Can you sleep/camp in it?

The 1st gen Odyssey is on my list for possible car camping vehicles. I am 5'10" tall and want the option of sleeping in the vehicle. Mainly a safety and weather consideration.

Does anyone know the cargo length from the back of the front seats when fully forward to the rear hatch? Also the cargo height from floor to ceiling?

It appears from info on Odyclub that some seat configurations my actually fold into a bed of sorts. If so, would this depend on the LX, EX, 6 pass or 7 pass version?

It seems for single camping that it would be ideal to fold the 3rd seat into the floor and remove one of the middle seats. The removed seat could be stored on top of a folded unremoved seat or next to it. I am hoping for enough space for a full length 25" wide self-inflating sleeping pad plus a cooler and two sterilite storage boxes. I figure reflectix panels for the rear windows might be the way to go. I have seen nice jobs done for the Element. A curtain on a bungee cord behind the front seats would complete the privacy.

Any thoughts?

TIA

Not sure of the dimensions, but I've slept in mine with the 2nd row seats out. Not the greatest- the floor pan is not flat and is also interrupted by the seat mounting hardware.
I've seen one on craigslist recently that was gutted and made for camping, but I can't find the ad now. :(

I never heard of the seats folding up into a bed. Certainly not true for the EX. Don't know about the lesser models.
I thought the Element did this trick. Could be wrong on that.

Research says with the 3rd row folded down and the middle seats out you can fit a 4x8 sheet in the back.
i haven't had the chance yet but the Ody will also be my foul weather camping vehicle.
if you get the ex with 2nd row captains chairs you have nice camp chairs to chill by the fire in.

I love travel, camping, and live music;)

Re: Couldn't close the hatch

Did you take the headrests off of the third row seats?

This must be the LX 7 passenger model since the EX appears to have captain's chairs in the second row.

Also, just to ask again - Does anyone know the cargo length from the back of the front seats when fully forward to the rear hatch? Also the cargo height from floor to ceiling?

I too have been doing lots of research for my road trip from the west coast to Newfoundland this summer...camping the whole time. I've looked at a few Toyota Sienna's, but I like these much better. Today I finally found one!! It's a 97 in very good condition. One owner and only 83,000 miles. I plan on taking out the back seats and building a conversion camper. I've looked at tons of sites and watched some great videos for ideas. Definitely building a narrow bed with storage underneath, and a kitchen area in the very back so I can stand under the back hatch when I cook. When I get it done, I'll post pics. Can't wait to wander and camp.

We slept 4 in the back of an LX with all seats folded down, me at 6'3" wife at 5'2" a 5 year old and a 3 year old. Arrived very late to a campsite in Arizona, and just took all supplies out of van and folded down the seats. Not perfect for a family of four, but it worked :) The cushions of the seats are not flat and level, but they do give a bit and it was better than sleeping on the floor with the seat attachments sticking up. Slid the front seats forward and folded the seat backs forward too.
