2000 honda odyssey.175,000.

It's turning over fine but is not starting, not even a grab at all. Awhile back I read about the manifold plugging up some so I took that off and cleaned it well about 6,000 ago and that worked when I was having intermittent starting problems. The otehr day, it wouldn't start for 30 sec or so and then was fine. Now it refuses to start.

Spark, fuel and air.

I hear the fuel pump turn on, Ignition switch is fine (even tried inserting the otehr way and I get the lights I'm supposed too) air filter is new.

What's the best way to check for spark without pulling a plug? Or is that the best way?

Thank you.

Andy

Check the #11 Fuse (15A) in the Driver's Under-dash Fuse Relay Box is seated properly. This fuse can get dislodged by mistake on the 1999 and 2000 models while engaging the parking brake. This fuse is for the ignition coils. The 2001-2004 had a cover installed to prevent this from happening.

If this is not the solution, then it's on to the main fuel relay, fuel pump, ignition switch and immobilizer system.

When you crank, is the green 'key' light flashing? If so, the immobilizer is still active and that's why it is turning over but not starting.

Try turning it to 'on' (lights on and beeping etc) and WAIT a few seconds until the green 'key' light goes off. Then try and let us know.

my 99 ody doesn't start occasionally, when this happens the green key light on the dash does not light up. The engine cranks but will not start. When I hit the fascia by the ignition keyhole with my fist, the light comes on and the car will start. This has been happening for about 4 months and so far I have been able to start the car by the "red neck" method described above. I suspect a problem in the immobilizer. There is a solenoid that is attached to the immobilizer and I'm not certain what it does. Any way, if your key light does not come on when you try to start your car you might try hitting the fascia above (or below) the ignition keyhole to see if this gets your immobilizer light to come on.

Rockycow, this sounds like a bad switch. The fact the green key doesn't light means the immobilzer recognized the key. But the switch is bad so you aren't getting a good signal. Hitting it is helping it to make contact but eventually that's not going to work.

Ok Our Odyssey so.... My green key light is flashing when I turn the key on, I waited for 3 minutes before trying tp start van and still flashed and van doesn't start. Is my immobilizer switch the culprit for sure? If so is there a write up on replacing it? I do have the manual online but haven't looked yet.

Thank you

It is located above the ignition cylinder and right to the shift stick with 2 connectors and fasten by a few small screws. Page 22-239 to 22-240 in my service manual which including diagnostic and replacement procedures. Sorry don't know how to post the pages here.

Do you have a different key? If not, try putting a bit of dielectric grease on the key and try again. If it starts, you need a new ignition switch (which is my guess at this point).

I had the same problem. Ended up being a short in the wiring coming from the fuel pump. The sheathing had worn through to bare wire and was grounding out on the van body. A little bit of electrical tape and it was right as rain. A quick easy fix. symptoms: Fuses kept blowing, fuel pump was working, main relay was fine.

What is dielectric grease
Not sure how much response you'll get from the posters above--most haven't been active on the forum for quite a few years (some more than a decade). I am not sure why dielectric grease was suggested above--the mechanical key lock interfaces with the electrical part, but the key is not part of the electrical circuitry.

Here is an answer to your question
