Hi all,

Once I got home, I pulled the car into our garage and went to put the gear into Park, but the gear stick wouldn’t move! It would only go down to L but wouldn’t go to neutral, reverse, or park.

After a quick search, Seems like most people have trouble with it getting stuck in park, haven’t seen much regarding the gear getting stuck in drive. The brake lights and dash lights all turn on. Does anyone have any idea what to do?

Unless the newer vehicles are different than my 2008 (and most vehicles I've driven,) there are no safety switches or locks that I'm aware of that prevent moving the shifter from D to N and back to D. You don't even usually need to push the button. You do usually need to push the button to go into D3, D2 or 1, and Reverse..

So, your shifter will not move into N from D? If that's the case, I'm thinking something is physically jammed. Possibly something under the hood where the cable attaches to the transmission or inside the shifter where the cable attaches to the shifter.

Just a thought...did you shut the car off with the shifter in D? The only time I have ever seen a shifter stuck in D is when the engine was shut off while in D (mine is a keyed ignition, so this may not even be possible in the newer Ody).

Is there a possibility that the gas access door was not fully closed (or registering as closed anyway)? I would still be very surprised if that caused that issue. I know I've driven around with that gas door open and never noticed anything unusual.

"he'll" ... how did you determine that? Not to be sexist, but. I know no dude that calls it a gas knob. and I know no dude that thinks the gas knob is connected the the "forward and backward slash no go stick". then again, I might run with the right dudes.

On our 2015, you absolutely do not have to press the brake to shift from Drive to Neutral. You don't even need to push in the shift lever button.

I know this with certainty because I do it every time I park our van in the garage. I have a rubber parking block on the garage floor to tell when I've pulled in far enough for the door to close behind me. As I enter the garage (in Drive) I bump the shifter into Neutral and coast forward until I feel the tire gently touch the parking block. Once I feel that contact, I press the foot brake and shift into Park. The van never "clunks" into reverse when we go to make our next trip if I park this way. Unfortunately I can't convince my wife that this is the best way to put the van into Park, but that is a completely unrelated issue.

looks like you're onto something @ozdevil66 ...

It may not be possible to operate the shift lever if the brake pedal is applied while the shift lever release button is held down.Depress the brake pedal first.

always apply the parking brake when parking

When Stopped
1.Depress the brake pedal firmly with the shift lever in (D).
2.Firmly apply the parking brake.
3.Move the shift lever from (D to (P).
4.Turn off the engine.Always set the parking brake firmly, in particular if you are parked on an incline.

I have altered the sequence above, I shift to N and take my foot off the brake and allow the van to come to rest on the parking brake before pressing the brake pedal and shifting into park.

They key here is that it was described that the shifter wouldn't go from Drive to Neutral. Even the owners manual posted above says you can shift from Drive to Neutral without depressing the button--there's no interlock there, and you definitely don't need to press the brake to go from Drive to Neutral. Again, this is for safety reasons. It's another method of stopping acceleration and/or slowing the vehicle in an emergency.

If the shifter would not go to Neutral from Drive there was something wrong with the vehicle. The OP is convinced they "fixed" it but I guarantee the "gas knob" had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Agreed @John Clark - there is something wrong with that shifter if it won't go from Drive to Neutral with just a bump. That was one of the big take-aways from Toyota's unintended acceleration scandal; you can stop runaway acceleration by shifting into neutral. Never try to shut down the engine - you lose your power brakes and steering that way. The other big take-away was to never ever stack floor mats.

At any rate, if the problem actually fixed itself, I think it's most likely that whatever was jammed in there fell out. Hopefully that's all it is.

i remember those runaway toyotas, sure neutral is the best option, but will take manual steering and manual brakes over a runaway vehicle.
Remember the one case of a runaway lexus, they called 911 while their car was speeding out of control, vs neutral or engine off?
someone died in that particular incident, and a testament to what panic does.

In the past I had misaligned winter floor mat, jam the gas pedal to the floor when getting on the highway.
car was manual, so when I put it in neutral the engine redlined im like wth?. just turned the key to off coasted along in the paved shoulder sorted out the mat, put the key back to on and let out the clutch in 3rd gear, and continued on.

There should be driver training on what to do when your engine fails.
so many people are unprepared for a SHTF situation while driving.
Staying calm is the first rule...

but I digress...

Shifting into neutral is also quite handy when sliding on ice or snow. But I am sure I don’t have to tell you Canadians about that. I grew up in Chicago area so the situation presented itself frequently.

And how do you shutdown a 16 Ody if you cannot get it out of Drive? You hinted but never said.

You can always shut it down... getting the key out (if not keyless ignition) and getting it started again would be the problem.

2016 is Keyless. So just pressing the button will shut down the engine while in gear?
