I qualify for the Honda loyalty program. So do I negotiate by best deal using honda financing, so I can apply the $500 cash bonus, and then a month later just pay it off? There is no prepayment penalty is there?
Once all documents are signed, you got the vehicle and drove off, you can approach your loan anyway you want to. Some people pay it right away, some people refinance with another lender with a better rate, and some just accept the term and make their monthly payments. And the days of penalty with prepayment on auto/house loans are long gone.

Should I buy my Honda Odyssey EXL in October with the Honda loyalty rebate, or wait for better year end deals in Nov and Dec 2024?
Buy at the end of the month/quarter would generally get you the best price. You can send out requests for prices from the dealers right now, if they don't give you the price you want, just keep on waiting if you are not in urgent need of a Odyssey.

Trim: 2025 EX-L
Color: Solar Silver, Gray Interior
MSRP: $43,910 (incl. roof rails+cross bars dealer valued at $595)
Price before TTL: $40,837 (incl. $989 processing fee)
OTD price: $42,779
City, State: Northern Virginia
Dealer: Honda of Chantilly

*Joyce Koons Honda Manassas was also very competitive but didn't have the same option/availability at the moment.
Goodness processing fees are getting wild, also in the DMV sigh

Step 1: Find the invoice price and lookup any Honda incentives that you qualify for.

Step 2: Calculate a baseline OTD price, Invoice price + tax/tags - Honda incentives.

Step 3: Get your finances in order. Check credit ratings, and/or pull together cash so you are ready to buy.

Step 4: Build your Honda on the official honda website, and then look at the inventories for dealers. You may need to enter multiple zip code to cover your area. Select dealers with the most inventory. You may need to check the dealer website also, but note that some list vehicles they don't actually have in stock. More stock, means more leverage.

Step 5: At end of month, go to each dealer website chat and tell them that you are buying a car "this week" and are going with best OTD price for "Odyssey EXL, Gray, no options, no trade". Only give them an email address. DO NOT give them your phone number until they give you the lowest OTD ("I prefer email"). They will try to get you to come in, but tell them you need the lowest OTD first. Even if you have a trade, don't tell them, get the OTD without trade

Step 6: If you don't get the price you want, tell them you will wait further in the year and to contact you if they want to make a sale. I try to hold out for at or below invoice price, but this will vary on time of year and incentives/economy.

Before covid you could buy a honda below invoice. You might be able to do that near the end of the year with an old model, but inventory is still much lower than it used to be.

If I had waited until Nov or Dec I think I could have saved up to another grand, and gotten a better finance rate (rates are going down). Honda offers end of year incentives sometimes.

Many dealers wouldn't budge from MD OTD $43500 to $44000, but found a few that would. You just need to contact the larger dealers in a 100 miles radius via email/chat and not give them your phone number UNTIL they give you a low OTD price quote with break down costs. I found many will beat a quote you have. It helps if you know exactly what you want (Trim, color, options). Tell them you DO NOT have a trade, get the actual cost first, you can barter the trade later.
Trim: Honda Odyssey EXL
Color: Modern Steel Metallic
Price before TTL: $39750 (including $500 rebate from 3.9% Honda financing, no early payoff penalty)
OTD price: $42400 (6% Maryland Tax + $300 MD tags/fees)
City, State: Tysons VA
Dealer: Ourismans Tysons Honda, Koons, Heritage (DC and Baltimore metro areas)

Trim: 2025 Touring with no Factor/Port installed Addons: (MSRP 46,610 + Dest 1,395 =) $48,005
Color: Smoke Blue Pearl
Price Before TTL: ( less $5,000 off MSRP and add $189 Nitro + $399 VIN Etch + $899 Doc Fees) = $44,492
OTD: (+ 425 Registration, $7.50 Tier Fee, $10.40 Electronic Registration Charge, $2,783 Tax after reduction for Trade-in) = $47,707
Location: Union, NJ. Planet Honda (Lithia Motors). Recommended!! It felt like a win-win.

I had the price before TTL on a text message (proposal) before I approached the dealer. I ensured that the vehicle was available before the appointment. I received prompt text responses.

I did not haggle on the dealer add-ons because, based on the comments here before me, the effective price was great. Thank you to the members who shared. The dealer's office had one add-on ($999) on the first paper, which I could remove immediately before talking to the sales rep. They obliged as I was ready to buy and it was not part of the original offer.

The Sales Process (including a small test drive) took about 90 minutes. It was clear as long as I stuck to the numbers I had on the text deal. There was a small gimmick. The initial paper created has inflated Registration charges, which drop down in the second version. This reduces the final number—but that is just a mirage.

The Trade-in (a 2008 Honda EX-L with 130K miles on it and chipping paint) was not much haggled for. I got the middle of the KBB range I was expecting. It was a negotiation separate from and after the car price.

Then the Car Prep and finance process took another 2 hours. Most of it was waiting. The actual signing of papers was just 20 minutes.
Do you have the pricing sheet by any chance, seems like you got a great deal

City, State: Chehalis, Washington
Dealer(If possible): Interstate Honda of Chehalis

Used CarEdge to get an idea of local area fair pricing and used that as my price point. Probably could have saved some more money but my market had limited inventory (especially for a white Touring in the Seattle area). Decided to drive about an hour south to a cheaper tax county which saved 1-1.5% in taxes. That dealership had one in transit that was about 2 weeks out. The dealership was easy to work with. No hard sales. Negotiated a price that was fair based on my market area and limited inventory. Worked with sales rep David Spath and sales manager Zach Soran - great to work with. Did not trade-in a car or use Honda financing. Purchased Oct 27, 2024.

First, let me say thank you for all of the great info here. Really appreciate this group for a number of years. Need some advice before I pull the trigger in the next week on a 2025 Odyssey Elite.

1) I have about $3k left on my loan with Honda Finance on the current Odyssey. I'm looking to purchase next week. Should I send the payoff directly to Honda so that its an easy transaction when I trade in for a new Odyssey? The last finance manager said they dont recommend it because the title can be stuck for quite a while and preferred to add the payoff to my 'new loan'. I could also pay all of it except $100 to minimize potential for 'screw-ups' by the Honda dealership.
2) Similar question, but if Honda dealership does not give a decent trade-in value, then I will likely go to Carmax or Carvana. Again, should I payoff prior or assume that they will? I have heard nightmares of loan delinquency by the dealerships, which means that the owner is still liable for payments, so trying to selishly do the best.

You are better off:
1) Payoff the loan on your car and wait for the pink slip before purchasing another car.
2) Do not pay off the loan on the car, and if you decided to trade-in, just add that $3k to your down payment. If you can get more from Carmax/Carvana, then just go with them and again just let them handle the remainder of the loan.

Lets not make things complicated.
