Anyone using 225/70/16 light truck tires? I was curious to see how they looked on a 2003 Odyssey. I am considering getting an all-terrain truck tire like the BFG All-terrain T/A for better snow traction and longer tread life. I also like the Firestone Destination all season truck tire which I am sure will last longer than the RE92 tires on my van now while also providing better rain and snow traction. We have about 26,000 miles on the OEM RE92 tires and they are worthless in the rain. The tread is just about at the wear bars as well.

If I don't get the Light truck tires I may settle with a 225 or 235/60/16 Bridgestone Turanza LH-S

There has been one poster here who used 225/70-16 tires on his/her Ody, but I'm not using the correct search terms to find the thread. I think they were happy with their choice, though for some reason I had the feeling they had to drive on rough, non-paved roads and the extra ground clearance was good for them.

Intriguing idea...

I'm not sure truck tires would give you better tread life, though, and they might be noisier. In particular, all-terrain tires will be noisier, I think, and you would likely give up some traction in dry conditions.

OE Odyssey 225/60R-16 tires turn at 770-780 revs per mile, while 225/70R-16s turn at 730-740. The speedometer and odometer will be off about 6 percent. To keep the revs per mile closer, you'd be better off with a 205/70R-16 (I don't think anyone makes one) or a 215/70R-16.

On the other hand, they might give you that macho SUV look.

Well the speedometer will only be a off a couple mph. The noise is not going to be a big concern. We always have the radio on and/or the kids are talking/singing.

I really don't want to go into a smaller width tire since the 225's already have a tough time handling the 4000+ lbs our Odyssey's weigh. A small loss in dry traction that the 225/70/16 may have is not a big concern since we rarely drive the truck hard enough in corners to make a difference.

The big concerns I have are snow traction, year round usage and 30,000-40,000 miles of usefull tread life. The OEM Bridgestone RE92 is absolute garbage after half the tread wears out. Wet traction is laughable and the tires shake now as well.

I really think I am going to try the Firestone Destination or the Bridgestone Dueler A/T in a 225/70/16. They both have Uni-T which helps give better traction after the tread wears. I will let you all know how they fair. I will post pictures as well. I hate the huge wheel well gap we have with the stock 225/60/16 tire size. Here is a couple pictures of my choices:

Bridgestone Dueler A/T 693 - treadwear 300

Firestone Destination - treadwear 480

How about the Michelin Hydroedge? Lots of excellent reviews, and considering that we drive our Odyssey like it's a pseudo-sports car, we're easily looking at 40k miles despite taking every corner at a minimum of 50% higher than the posted limit. I think it's got a treadwear rating of 760, and keeping at the OEM size won't hurt the Odyssey's acceleration from a stop either.

Another consideration with a loss of dry traction is stopping distances under braking. I doubt the difference would be too dramatic, though.

Yes, braking is one area which folks forget about, when saying they do not drive hard. EVERYONE drives to the extreme some time with regard to braking. We all have missed a car slowing in front of us and had to do an all-out stop. That is when one needs all the grip on the road that a higher performance tire would offer.
