Thinking about getting one but wondering how DIY the install is.

I got mine done at parkway sounds in MA, where I bought my car. that's exactly what I thought too, but the installer said it's a safety feature of the odyssey. If you find someone that will bypass that safety feature please let me know. I think it's a rather convenient feature to have.

So what you are saying is they charged u for aux hookup and ur not able to open sliding doors when remote started with viper? I have gone through this thread and people have reported that they are able to do this with viper remote and not factory fob.

I had looked at these as I liked the idea of using the stock key fob, but the limited range would not work for me. I really like the cell phone remote start option but do not like the cost.
Bottom line, I want longer useful range in a remote start system and I want it to control the doors, back hatch, and moon roof if possible. I also want door control to work any time, engine on or off. And, of course, all this without buggering up my wiring... :)

I contacted my installer of my Viper 5901 about my sliding doors and trunk not being able to open while the engine is running. They said they can do it but for $100 extra for labor and relays.... so a total of 775+tax *sigh*

I went with the Honda unit as I cannot stand aftermarket stuff, I have never been happy with any aftermarket electronic device (stereos have too small buttons for my chubby fingers), they always worked as advertised, I just don't like them. The Honda unit works great, I use it when I am in the house and will be leaving in 10 minutes or so to warm up the car. Admittedly, it is annoying that I can't leave the car running and get in, turn the key and go, like the GM factory units, but I can deal with that, I just won't be using it as much. The range is good for me, I was three stories up in a building, and the car was across the street and it fired right up...

When I was taking delivery, I asked my salesman about getting the Honda remote starter unit installed. He actually told me the Honda unit is crappy and suggested I get an aftermarket unit and just have the dealer install it. He didn't recommend a specific aftermarket unit, but mentioned that the Honda unit's range and the design of the fob were sub-par.

First, thanks for responding. I guess I wasn't too clear. My real question is, during times when I am not using the remote start, do both original key remotes still work for opening the doors and hatch. This is my wife's car and she will be the one who uses the remote start. I don't need the remote start and would like to just keep the key on my ring and not have to go through the expense or put up with the added bulk of a second remote start fob. I hope my question makes sense and any help you could offier would be great as I am finalizing the order today. Thanks again.

Bellvue260, you have been a wonderful help!!! My dealer is telling me that if I get the honda version, I will only get one key with the remote start fob and I won't get the other key back as they need it for "the system." I think this is not true. And he is just telling me this stuff to push me toward the cheeper aftermarket system. Do you still have both keys with the remotes bulit in for opening the doors and starting the car and one remote start fob. Thanks again!

Find a new dealer. The Honda remote starter has a separate remote for the starter, and the keys function as I described. I got two keys with the car plus the valet key. It sounds like they are putting in an aftermarket unit. When I looked into getting an aftermarket one for my 04 Accord they needed a key for the system as you described. I did not do that as I did not want to give up a key. Below is a link to the Honda system, the picture shows what the remote starter remote looks like. You will in fact get only one remote starter remote with the system, a second one costs another c note or so...

Thanks again, that's what I'm about to do. I was calling BS on him as I read the 22 pages of inst from Honda for the Mechanics for the instal. As usual they have no clue what they are talking about and instead want to sell me an Automate brand which looks cheap. we had bad experience with aftermarket remote car starters which is why I don't want to go that way. It look like if you can deal with having to restart the car and don't mind the bulk the Honda unit is fine. Thanks!!

I'm reviving this old thread with an added question. Is there a way for the heated seats to be turned on while using a remote starter on a 2011 and up Ody? This was not an issue with my 05' as it had toggle type switches for the seats as opposed to the digital type switch in my 11'.

I don't believe there is a way to do this with the OEM Honda remote start, but I would bet that some of the more advanced aftermarket systems would have this capability.

Just go with aftermarket. I have compustar on my 2012 EXL and so far so good. I could start the van a mile away give or take, i have a 2 way alarm/remote starter so it gives me confirmation of what's happening with the van and the best part is when you get to the van and unlock it, it would not turn the engine off like the honda one.

I have the Viper 5901 on my EX-L. It's great. I also have the mile range, which isn't realistically a mile and it's also a 2 way remote. Due to the safety feature of the Odyssey, I cannot use the key FOB to open the door while the car is started. I just wish I knew that before hand.

Same here, I bought the factory parts for remote start and installed myself, then had the dealer program it. I appreciate the safety features, but wish I had read a bit more before going that route. The biggest reason I went OEM is the plug and play aspect. I've installed several aftermarket systems and don't like hacking up the wiring like you have to do on many of them.

Posting as the info is relevant. i have a 2011 Odyssey Touring with honda remote starter. i bought the vehicle in summer and the starter worked when tested. Winter came and i bought steel rims and new rubber but cheaped out on the Tire sensors and figured i could just live with the annoying warning light. from the day the vehicle was on the winter rubber the remote starter never worked so that was disappointing. i suspected it was due to the TPMS error and asked a honda tech and he said that it couldn't be a factor. well last night i switched back to my summer set(has TPMS) as it's time and tested the remote starter after the error went away and what do you know. it worked. so lesson learned. 1) shouldn't have cheaped out in the first place. 2) guess the remote starter doesn't like any errors or warning lights. For anyone thinking about forgoing the TPMS dont do it if you plan on getting honda remote starter.
