Thinking about getting one but wondering how DIY the install is.
We did the aftermarket Viper on our 2011 after loving the one on our 2006.
The Viper keyfobs control the sliders and liftgate as well as the starter, alarm, etc. So we have no need for the Honda keyfob anymore... but since it is built into the key, it's not like we can leave it home.
The range on the Viper is pretty incredible too. It is two-way so you will get a confirmation when the car starts, and you know when it shuts off. If you are out of range, there is an iPhone and Android app and we can start/stop engine, arm/disarm alarm, and open trunk through that app (those all give you immediate feedback that they've gone through too).
My husband has set off the alarm a few times and I receive the text message pretty quickly that it has been triggered. I hope I never need that feature but it is nice knowing that it works so quickly.
We also had the Smart Windows installed with the system so we can open/close all 4 windows and sunroof through the remote. Kind of a nice feature if you're parked far away with a window open and it starts pouring.
Chose the Viper route over the Honda since we have our dogs in the car almost all the time and leaving the car running w/climate controls is a must in Chicago summers and winters. I also like how by default our system runs for 60 minutes. The most important thing to us was the range and two-way reliability. If I start the car I need to know it starts, and when it shuts off I need to be notified ASAP.
Overall I'm extremely happy with our Viper, the differences are huge IMO.
Hey Hwlcd, I noticed you are also in NYC. Would you mind posting or Pm'ing me where you got yours done? Are you not able to open the doors while the car is running with viper remote? I thought that is what aux ports are for so that you are able to use sliding doors when car is one. I know you cant use factory fob while the car is on to unlock the doors or for sliding doors.I got the 5901 installed on my 2012 EX-L. I had the same system installed on my civic 2 years ago and it has been great. no smartstart, just the standard install. I paid 575+tax which included unit+bypass. This time I paid 675+tax for unit+bypass+more aux for the sliding doors. I found out afterwards that i couldn't open door with car running... I should have read first... oh well. The bypass on this car was more expensive then for my civic and the extra aux unit cost a bit more too.
my plan is to pair each remote with both cars, as car1 and car2. So that I only carry one alarm+remote starter for both cars!
So what you are saying is they charged u for aux hookup and ur not able to open sliding doors when remote started with viper? I have gone through this thread and people have reported that they are able to do this with viper remote and not factory fob.I got mine done at parkway sounds in MA, where I bought my car. that's exactly what I thought too, but the installer said it's a safety feature of the odyssey. If you find someone that will bypass that safety feature please let me know. I think it's a rather convenient feature to have.
You may want to talk to installer again as many here have reported the doors to be working while the car is on.yup that's what i'm saying...
Of all the decisions needing to be made with this purchase, what to do about remote starting was/is the most difficult. The dealer does not recommend the Honda remote. I understand why. Limited range and functionality, large fob, etc.
I would really like to have the remote start be a factory installed unit but Honda seems to have missed the boat on this one. It does do the job but I like the extended functionality of the other units (aftermarket).
With that understood I then had to decide if I was going to have the dealer install the aftermarket brand they carry, Pursuit (http://adventproducts.com/remotestartsystems/).
The standard model offered was also a basic model but had much more range. I decided to not get the basic model and was going to take the chance and have one installed aftermarket... I really wanted to have this installation covered by the dealer installed policy, but oh well.
Then, after all was decided except the remote start question, the dealer said that he could have any model of the Pursuit line installed if I wanted it. So I went with that option and selected the Pursuit PRO901C. I have not been able to find any real reviews of this unit so am a bit unsure about this decision. I have seen one post here concerning a Pursuit install and it was positive but did not include much info.
I have an open question to the dealer that has not been answered yet. That is, will the doors, rear hatch, and moonroof be controlled by the remote? My Ody TE is not to be delivered until mid Dec (build start date is the 25th) so I have a bit of time to get more info.
If anyone has experience with the Pursuit line I would love to hear an opinion.
Tnx.
How large is that remote? It's too bad the original OEM remote is so big, I didn't want to carry 2 large key fobs.I tried to get the administrator to replace this post with an edited version but no response. The model was mistyped, it should read Pursuit PRO9801C . Sorry...
wow, thats a crazy price. I guess a well known installer wanting $625 with all the relays and labor is not a bad deal in NY after all.I contacted my installer of my Viper 5901 about my sliding doors and trunk not being able to open while the engine is running. They said they can do it but for $100 extra for labor and relays.... so a total of 775+tax *sigh*

how's the range on this? is the remote with the lcd screen that much larger than the other one?
When I was taking delivery, I asked my salesman about getting the Honda remote starter unit installed. He actually told me the Honda unit is crappy and suggested I get an aftermarket unit and just have the dealer install it. He didn't recommend a specific aftermarket unit, but mentioned that the Honda unit's range and the design of the fob were sub-par.I went with the Honda unit as I cannot stand aftermarket stuff, I have never been happy with any aftermarket electronic device (stereos have too small buttons for my chubby fingers), they always worked as advertised, I just don't like them. The Honda unit works great, I use it when I am in the house and will be leaving in 10 minutes or so to warm up the car. Admittedly, it is annoying that I can't leave the car running and get in, turn the key and go, like the GM factory units, but I can deal with that, I just won't be using it as much. The range is good for me, I was three stories up in a building, and the car was across the street and it fired right up...
