Brake fluid ~ how many pints ?

I'm going to replace the brake fluid in my 03 (59425 miles). How many pints should I have on hand. I'm going to use a Motive pressure bleeder.

Since I've only had this Ody for a few months I have no idea if the brake fluid has been changed. It does not look like it.

I tried to search this, but could not find an amount.

Thanks

I just flushed the brake fluid in my 02 Odyssey. I used almost 3 bottles of the Honda brake fluid which comes in 12 oz containers. So I used 36 oz which would be 2 and 1/4 pints.

The interesting thing about this brake fluid flush was that I couldn't tell when the old fluid was flushed out and replaced with the new fluid. The fluid going through the clear tube looked the same throughout the flush. The fluid that I removed from the master cylinder reservoir did look darker than fresh fluid, but the fluid coming out of the bleeder screws didn't. So I just ended up flushing fluid from each bleeder screw until I had an "appropriate" amount in the waster container.

Anyone have any comments on why I couldn't tell the difference? I'm thinking I put enough new fluid in the system so that the old fluid is out.

I just did this a couple of weeks ago on our '02. It was the second time. I also used the Motive power bleeder. Make sure you dry fit the bleeder cap to the master cylinder reservoir and pressurize like the instructions say to make sure you have a good leak-proof fit.

Also, try to remove as much old fluid from the mc using a syringe before you start bleeding.

I noticeed the same thing regarding the color of the fluid. I just let each caliper bleed for a pretty long time to make sure the lines were flushed.

The bleed works slower than I expected using the recomended pressure, which I believe is about 12 psi.

Good luck

Probably because the old fluid wasn't horrific enough yet.

But it's always good to prevent than to fix.

When I finally got around to changing the brake fluid in my Odyssey, the fluid had ruined the brake master cylinder.

The fluid I purged from the brake system was some of the most awful terribly horrific looking crap I'd seen come out of a car.

So you did a good thing, you want to purge the system before it gets to that point.

Since I started this thread I guess I should let you know how it went. I used just shy of 3 pints so that was a good amount to use. I had a little trouble getting a leak free fit with the Motive bleeder, but did get it to work with just a little leakage.

I too did not notice much color change, the fluid in the reservoir was darker but what came out of the lines was just slightly darker than the new fluid. I do not know if the fluid was ever changed, I bought this Ody in the beginning of Sept.
It's a 2003 with 59,800 miles on it now.

The good thing is now I'm good for three years.:)
