brake height

I have a 2006 odyssey touring which I have owned for about 7 years. I have noticed something which just may be the way it is but I thought I would ask. I have noticed that my brake pedal, when depressed, is as low as the gas pedal. I have also noticed that if I am not careful I can press the brake and gas pedal at the same time. I went to the local honda dealer about this and they said that there is no adjustment on this and to, basically, live with it. The brakes work fine.

Thoughts?

While it's true there's no adjustment for brake pedal height, there are many reasons why a brake pedal could travel lower than normal (e.g. bad fluid, air in the lines, worn flexible lines).

I think they dismissed your concern too quickly without doing some investigation.

When was your brake fluid flushed last?

thank you for the reply.

I have no idea when brake fluid was last flushed. When the service light comes on I take it in. I will have to try and look over my receipts. That being said is that something that would be done during the course of regular service? Perhaps I should take it in and tell them to do it.

Here is how my question went. I drove to the dealer, went into heir service desk and explained the problem. The girl then said 'wait a minute' opened the door to the shop and said something like; "hey joe, is there anyway to adjust a brake pedal?" and Joe said "no" and kept on walking. I find the whole experience not exactly inspiring and it was obvious to me that they, literally, didn't give a damn. That being the case I am not real eager to go back there. Perhaps I should try an independent shop which might actually want the business.

I guess I could find an email address to honda and ask them what they think. Thanks again for the reply.

Your brake pads may be worn. When was the last time your brakes were serviced? And if your brake fluid hasn't been changed out in over 2 years, then I would suggest you do so along with checking how much brake pad you have left as well.

I don't know if the maintenance minder signals brake fluid service or not. I suspect not, since it is often overlooked.

A brake fluid flush is done every 2 to 3 years, regardless of miles driven. If you live in a humid climate or have lots of rain, every 2 years would be appropriate. If you live in a dry climate, every 3 years is good. It should not be left past 3 years.

Your account of your interaction with the dealer service department shows a devil-may-care attitude on their part. Do you have another dealer in your area? If so, try them as it can be to your advantage to establish contact with a dealer. If not, seek out an independent shop. Whatever you do, don't return to that first dealer.

The pedals may be adjustable, but not independently, correct? I believe the OP's issue was the relationship of the brake and gas pedals. Adjusting the pedals will move them closer to or further away from the driver, but the relationship will remain the same.

Wow! thank you for all the replies!

I went to the manual and there it was! I have no idea if it will help but I will see. The fact that its there and that the dealer shop forman had no clue kinda says it all. I am thinking of rolling over on the dealer to honda just to see what happens <G>

I found that the adjustment was at its lowest point. Have no idea how that happened and suspect I mis pressed the adjustment due to ignorance and being lazy and not studying the manual. I am grateful for being told of this. When I adjusted the gas and brake I found I no longer could press both at the same time, even though they seemed to move in tandem. I seem to have solved my problem.

On Monday, however, I will call Honda and suggest the have a little 'visit' with their dealer as they seemed a bit too cavalier for my taste and also seemed also proud of their own ignorance. This is especially true as one, I think, shold have faith in their dealer and their expertise.

Thanks again for all the help!!

Thanks for the thought.

I am a bit isolated. I have a local dealer and the next closest one is 3 hours away. I thought to call them and whine but I have had experience with that and it does no good. After I send this I will whine at the main honda service and, hopefully, they will contact the local dealer. I have no idea if it will help but I will find out <G>

I have now submitted a formal complaint against the dealership. I called the customer contact number at https://owners.honda.com/ and whined. I was thanked and was told that I had submitted a complaint against the dealership. I have no idea what happens next but thought I would post that here. It sounded as if they took my whining seriously.

Just thought I would post this.
