I finally got the metal filler piece off using a pry tool. I used Permatex AVIATION FORM-A-GASKET. Holds up to gasoline and no plastic warning. I used an artists brush and thin coated both inside and outside surfaces of the plastic filler tube. I also coated the metal tube anulus on both sides placing the brush in as deep as you can go. All the way to the bottom.

Does the fuel cap have a pressure relief feature? With my nose up against he fuel cap door crack, I can smell gas on occasion. Not throwing CEL any more. Before I did the form-a-gasket fix, I could smell gas in the wheel well. No smell there now.

I finally got a chance to try osucool's suggestion and attached pics. Mine does have an O ring, hopefully you can see it there. I cleaned and RTV'd to see what would happen. I did hear pressure release when removing the cap so mine only seems to happen on occassion. Next I'll clear the code and cross my fingers. If nothing then on to the solenoids I guess. BTW, this only took about 30 mins to do. I also greased up the o-ring on the cap to see if it helps.

Disregard my last post, at least for now. The code I now have is p0325. First time I have got this code which says knock sensor typically related to critters eating the knock sensor wire. I reset it and will monitor.

osucool was right!!

I don't know how he found it, but it works!!! I followed his instructions, I had been wrestling with the CEL for several weeks, P1456, did the gas cap, still came on. It always seemed to come on at half a tank of gas. Well, I bought permatex HIGH TACK gasket sealant. Item # 80062 (comes in a little white can with a paint brush. Followed osucool's directions... and VOILA!! (this website rocks!)
(Our van has 103k miles, original trans and fluid! ...so far, so good!!)

Is the code for the knock sensor circuit P0325 or the EVAP P1456?

I followed the photos and (excellent) instructions to fix the plastic/metal seal with form-a-gasket and it has cleared my code. I've driven a few hundred miles and a full tank of gas in the last 3 weeks and still no check engine light.

Thanks for the great idea! The dealer wanted to charge me $900 to replace the fuel filler neck (I assume they smoked it to find the offending part). This appears to have done the job for $3.

I still can't figure out why Honda didn't put a gasket in there? It's just bare plastic against metal, and no real pressure to keep the seal air tight. Just those clips holding the metal against the plastic, and not very hard at that. Odd indeed.

Awesome fix though! Thanks again!

check engine light. p1456

Uh oh... cel is back on.. same code. Perhaps the fix isn't a long term solution? I now have 111,000 miles on it. Light always comes on at half a tank....:( I have cleared it two times by removing the neg battery cable.
