Come to a stop
Keeping your right foot on the brake, shift to N and set the parking brake.
Take your right foot off the brake allowing
the van to come to rest on the parking brake.
Shift into P.
It will go into and out of P like butter.
It has become second nature to me.
But good luck getting your wife to do it....
yes, unfortunately it's normal. I have the same clunk on my Ody.
According to the 3 different Honda dealers I've been, they explained only 1 thing --- it's the sound of a pushrod that shifts the transmission to Park.
