Confirmation of 2025 model and release

I am in a bit of squeeze and looking for guidance. My current lease expires in March, 2024. Should I wait for the Odyssey in July or August or just buy another car. I don’t want to buy the current generation (resale values + old tech )

Couple of questions.
  1. Are we guaranteed to see a new odyssey in mid 2024 as a 2025 model? Are there any Honda folks that can confirm

  2. If so, for the past 2 generations were the first year models reliable?

Buying a first year model will pretty much always be risky. Especially considering the 6th gen Ody is likely to feature the new powertrain that has only been around for a few years.

I wouldn't even expect reports until at least a few more months down the road.

Honda Odyssey and Pilot are made in the same Honda factory in Alabama. The new Pilot has the 2nd gen Honda 10-speed transmission and the new and slightly updated V6 engine so I think the new gen Odyssey would feature the same updated ICE powertrain which is what I prefer like the current gen. No AWD is needed. No hybrid is needed. Just give me pure ICE/FWD with even more interior space which is what mini-vans should excel because of chassis packaging advantage.

Jokes aside, Honda is moving a lot of these.
Even as sedan sales crater, Honda could sell 80k odysseys this year.
All the press love and common sense for minivans has somewhat returned, and I think the Sienna and Carnival haven’t done as well as hoped.
With that said, I predict a March / April 2024 announcement of the new (2025) Odyssey.
(the 2018 was announced on Dec 16 2016 and unveiled in Jan 2017, but I think the Honda-preferred NY Auto show had other Honda / Acura releases)

Toyota made a huge mistake not allowing for middle seat removal in the Sienna. I don't want forced into a hybrid either. And Kia is... well... a Kia. Plus the Carnival is a terrible name, and styling is even worse than the Odyssey in my opinion. I recently bought a Grand Highlander, but looking forward to getting back into a van. I'd sell this thing in a minute if the Odyssey came out with a new model that checked the right boxes. Give me a removable center seat in second row, ceiling vents in back, panoramic sunroof, 360 camera, better display. Hating the trend of enormous front center consoles. I prefer no front center console at all in a minivan. I like the pass-through to the back or place to stick a cooler or beach bag between the front seats, not to mention the added leg room. The enormous console on the Grand Highlander and most other new cars is so annoying and claustrophobic.

Can’t answer your first question (I am just as eager to hear what’s coming). However, we took a chance on the 2011 model, first year of the 4th generation. I can report that I had none of the typical “still working things out” issues which I expected from the first-year of a new model. We had sliding door and transmission issues in year 8 of ownership, but those were more wear and tear related.

As an update my friend who works for Honda USA just told me today after I asked him about a 2025 Odyssey… that there will not be a new model. In fact Honda will be moving from a 6-7 year redesign schedule to a 12 year. That includes the Odyssey. Overall structure will stick around a few more years. Honda has gone all in on battery technology for the future and the cuts are in extending the lifespan of their models. So there you have it folks.

There won't be a new Odyssey for a few more years sadly. Electric has completely upended the industry and gas models on hold.
You havent heard from him because it's not happening this year. Gonna be a few more years of the wave model.
I dunno if that's really true. Re: electric/EV - minivans are meant for long-distance family hauling PLUS school runs. EV fails there.
(Hertz just announced they're dumping 20k EV's and replacing with gas/ICE cars)

Let's wait for NYC (auto show), and if that doesn't happen, yes, late 2024.
(the 2018 model was announced/revealed at NAIAS in January 2017... but that show has moved to September)
Honda sold 74,738 Odysseys in 2023, a 57% jump over 2022, when supply chain issues really hurt them.

They could do close to (or above) 100k if they had a compelling new model with decent infotainment and maybe a ruggedized (Subaru Outlander- or Volvo XC-style) cladding.
The slightly decontented (over Touring/Elite) Sport has been okay, but hasn't done 30k units.

Buddy of mine works for Honda USA. He told me he was told they are so invested in electric that they are extending the model refresh for the Odyssey and a few other models to 12 year cycles. Battery tech may not currently support minivans, but solid state will. Plus I think they are financially thinned out right now in development for electric they can't afford retooling gas lines.

Hyundai/Kia are just not on my "try" list yet. Last time I drove one a few years ago (Santa Fe) it was a rental car. It was ok I guess, but I hated the seats more than I dislike the seats of our '13 Civic. Frankly it reminded me of a Toyota - a boring appliance. Maybe newer ones are better? They at least look cooler but not sure how they drive. I know years ago their powertrains were generally OK but it was all the other things that broke (door handles literally pull off the side of the car, plastic interior pieces break off, stupid little annoying things).

I was expecting some sort of spectacular fire, and saw nothing. I am disappointed.

OK more seriously, what about being an EV makes that vehicle plow through those barriers more easily? The high mass with low center of gravity? Are EV's really that much heavier? I know batteries can be heavy, but compared to a full tank of gas I'm not sure how much heavier we're talking.

back to the 2025+ Odyssey.
Kia just (confirmed) the updated Carnival with a hybrid powertrain (it was not an option prior), along with 'extensive' visual and interior updates.
Honda is falling further behind from a feature perspective, if not a quality/reliability one...

Honda is still going to be top of the minivan game IMO. They might be switching to hybrids but if Honda sticks with the V6, it'll be a better option than the Carnival with it's 1.6t hybrid combo or Sienna and it's 2.4 4cyl hybrid. If I'm driving a 4rd row, I better have a V6.

Honda does need to redesign the Odyssey. Current model seems....stagnant.

I know that people have mentioned their "wishlist" for the 2025 refresh, but what do people realistically think Honda will do? And when do we think there will be images? Trying to decide if I want to just pull the trigger soon on a 2024 and wait to see what they do with 2025.

Do you think they will update the front and tail lights? I'm assuming wireless apple carplay and maybe update the digital dash? The screen doesn't bother me as much as others but I think the dash looks old. I just don't fully understand what they mean by "styling and technology enhancements." I'm a little wary because they call the MDX updates "significant enhancements" and they don't use that word with Odyssey, which makes me think they won't be "significant." Lol.

I expect the bare minimum - face to match new Accord (at least when you squint), 9-inch multimedia screen on higher trims, ditto full digital speedo display. I also expect them to just update the Odyssey engine as they did the Pilot. I'm waiting for '25 because I want the updated Honda Sense suite - having driven a new Civic with it, I'm looking forward to that upgrade over my '18.
