Bought NGK 3657 plugs from Amazon, fulfilled by Great Auto Shop ("...a full-line distributor of O.E.M. and top brand aftermarket auto parts, tools, supplies, equipment and accessories serving both professional & do-it-yourself customers. We provide high quality auto parts and top notch service in our fast growing online business. With thousands of products in stock, including brakes, chasis parts, electrical, bearings, emissions, filters, gaskets, hydraulics, heatings and A/C parts, ignition, rack & pinion steering, exhaust systems, belts, hoses, shocks & struts, timing parts, fuel pumps, spark plugs, u-joints, thermostats and much more, you can be sure that Great Auto Shop can help you find the part you need and ship it to you quickly.")...

Anyway, opened up and checked the gaps....way off (.03 typically, but varied). Back in the box and off to Autozone....purchased same product (Autozone purchased plugs were gapped correctly). Took home to to compare.

Packaging very similar (small variances). Plugs had a few differences (ink shade, markings on metal parts, the small "cone-shaped" electrode was bigger/fatter on the fake, and the electrode "arm" on the fake had a bit of a bend to it whereas the real ones were curved).

Very possible that they were both NGK, but I doubt it.

If nothing else, check your gaps and never trust!

I'm looking for spark plugs for my '10 Ody (NGK ILZKR7B11), which are, to my disappointment, different than my '05 because I already have a set :( but I digress.
Anyway, I was seeing on ebay and amazon that some are shipping from China which scared me off, would hate to have a piece of either electrode or center insulator break off.
I may bite the dealership bullet on this one.

Dont buy anything on ebay that ships from china. The normal buyer protection plan doesnt exist because of return shipping cost difference. You can prove they are counterfeit to validate a SNAD case and ebay will offer to let you pay return shipping cost. Its a scam. Return shipping will be outrageous and not trackable in china. Seller will offer token refund like 20% to avoid bad feedback.
Thieves in china ruining ebay and ebay doesnt care.

I have always used Advance Auto for plugs, there are always coupons for them. Right now there is a 20% off any order, just do a search. The NGK plugs for an 05 odyssey were $12.99 each so with coupon will be $10.40.

It is illegal to sell Counterfeit products on both Ebay and Amazon (it is against their policy). You can and should return your purchases to the sellers and let sellers know that you will report them to Ebay/Amazon. That should be enough for them to treat you nicely, but you should still report them.

similar situation, but i did not checked gaps before installation. bought these on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/162815169854 and description was " 6X OEM NGK Laser Iridium Spark Plug". i guess that more careful customers complained and description got changed to "unbranded".
after reading your post i just sent e-mail to the seller asking for refund, but wondering if it's ok' to drive with the unbranded/counterfeited plugs? the engine sounds normal.

Now I’m worried. I got 6 plugs from “Good Autopart Shop” on Amazon. The gaps weren’t exactly 0.044” but the ones I pulled out of my car weren’t either so I wasn’t too worried.

I will be replacing these soon but for the time being what is the main concern here? Reduced longevity or potential engine failure?

A spark plug is exposed to the pressure and temperature of every ignition stroke that its cylinder produces. A substandard plug could wear quicker or worst case could shed its bits inside the cylinder.

Thanks Dave, that’s what I assumed. The plugs were definitely counterfeit. When i get access to my computer I’m going to put some pictures together so I can post the differences I found. I will also be pursuing a refund if possible. Notable differences:

-NGK logo was centered in height on legit plugs. It was up near the top on the counterfeit
-NGK logo matched up with the stamp on the hex portion on the legit ones. NGK logo was opposite stamp on the hex portion of the counterfeit.
-NGK logo is a slightly different font and is a lighter blue than the counterfeit
-japan stamp is slightly different
-metal was uniform color on legit ones. Metal had a galvanized/rainbow look on the finish of the counterfeit plugs.
-real plugs had a thick washer, counterfeit ones had two thin flat washers
-iridium tip was sharp and thin on the real plugs but fat and a bit dull on the counterfeit ones.
-the curvature of the insulator tip was nice and smooth with a clean weld on the real plugs. The curvature of the insulator tip on the fake plugs was almost 90 degrees with a little curve. Weld was a little messier
-lastly gaps were all off on the counterfeits showing about .030 or less.

These differences are numerous but they are done so well that if you don’t have a legit NGK plug near you you wouldn’t notice. Although now that I’ve studied this I may be able to tell...

strunkf10, i also bought counterfeit NGK plugs on ebay and this morning got a full refund after sending e-mail yesterday to the seller. The seller name was "autogadgets2015" on ebay, but e-mail reply for refund was a name with three chinese letters... seller with 99.6% positive feedback btw.. i'm pretty sure that these are made in china or taiwan and not in Japan as seller still claims on ebay.
i'm planning to drive w/these for another 30k miles or so and then replace.

Bori: you are braver than I am. I got a refund issued as wel but it was handled by amazon and not the seller. I haven’t even been able to write a poor review because amazon considered the words “selling counterfeit spark plugs” as libel. Yet I am also not allowed to post links or pics in my review to prove its libel! In other words, beware of sellers no matter how many five star reviews they have, it’s clear amazon does not wish for too many bad reviews to get out their so they can remain trusted.

I got a 25% off online coupon to advance auto parts and got 6 for $58 so not too bad at all. Replaced them today.

Small Update.... I left seller feedback on Amazon (1 star, suspected counterfeit product). Seller wrote to me via Amazon: "I'm so sorry for your problem when buy and use our's product. I have made fully refund for you, you can check in your account. I hope you feel hapy with my service and accept my appologize. Please help me remove your feedback on your oder, it's big problem with us. Hope will receive your help soon. Thank you"

Yeah...right.

Lots of reviews on these plugs (not the seller, but the plugs) stating they are fake. Careful what ya get.

i was bit by the counterfeit bug as well. never knew or heard of these plugs until i read this thread. i bought 6 on ebay for 29 bucks. so after reading this thread i pulled them back out and mine dont even say japan on them.
on the side it says assembled in USA from Japanese parts plus all of the other indicators are present. i am pulling them all out immediately.
UNREAL

Yeah, counterfeiting is an epidemic, copying everything from designer handbags to aircraft parts.

However, 6 NGK spark plugs for only $29, on fleabay to boot, should have been a clue. "If it's too good to be true..."

Good move to have pulled them right away. :)

Just joined and I really hate to resurrect an old thread, but thought it be better than creating a new one. I recently got bit by this counterfeit spark plug (Genuine Honda NGK DILZKR7A11G for '12 Odyssey) scheme, except the ones I got were very hard to distinguish until you held a Retail NGK or OEM Honda plug next to it. This was bought on eBay, I know, never trust anything there, but nearly 300 units sold with 99.8% positive feedback and pricing in line with typical NGK IR plug prices ($10-12 each, so not sure why these specific NGK's are $23-33 a pop). Not to mention I've been fortunate with other parts purchases being authentic, OE items. I've attached a tons of pictures from this comparison.

Hopefully these photos show up in the thread since it's a first post.
