Here's how to replace the fuel pump assembly:

Did this over the weekend (fuel gauge didn't work below 1/4 full). Lessons learned on a 2008 EX:

  1. Didn't need to remove the door runner plastic to remove/reinstall carpet
  2. The plastic bits over the bars have clips running along the inside seam. Unclasp these before pulling past the bar, or they will probably break.
  3. Fuel relay requires removal of trim piece not covered in video, not just the fuse cover.
  4. I didn't disconnect the battery.
  5. Clean under the carpet and in the well thoroughly before removing the pump. Don't want any little bits falling into your tank.
  6. More fuel came out than expected after relieving pressure. Having a bottle with a wide enough opening to stuff the fuel line into would work well.
  7. Fuel pump lock ring tool isn't needed if you have strong hands and are good with guestemating the torque.
  8. I only had a few gallons in the tank when I did this, but lots of gas came off of the old pump. Have a bucket ready to dump it into.
  9. Putting the new one in was a PITA:
    1. Put the new gasket on the tank first then install pump.
    2. Have someone to hold it down while starting the threads of the lock ring. The spring kept popping it partially off.
  10. Found that I needed to have a couple more gallons of gas in the tank. I would estimate there were at least 2-3 gal in there, but only a little was visible from the hole. The engine wouldn't turn over at all until I fetched 2 more gallons (i.e. ~4 gal total).

Interesting. IMHO, I never let my van get down to 1/4 tank. (so would never know of this possible issue). Years ago,
was told Honda fuel pumps were "bullet proof". Also, told, not good to let gas tank get to low, bad for "fuel pumps".
You have more time/energy than me. :) I would have just lived with the issue. Good Luck.

2005 EX, 202k miles: tried installing a new Herko 258GE fuel pump today: think it was defective. The "pod" on the original swings towards level, once it's part way into the tank: this Herko resists swinging that way: the black pleated line seen on the pump in the video is too stiff on the Herko, forcing the pod against the bottom of the tank. Took it out to examine it, and tried to rotate the pod into position, but it started coming apart. Ended up putting the original back in. However, the fuel gauge is now showing "Empty", and the low fuel warning light is flashing. Will have to revisit it tomorrow, to see what I did wrong. Will update.
