Also, reread you owners manual carefully to make sure you cleared it first.

 

Unplug the garage door opener first. Then program Homelink.

 

This is the step I followed:
1. Unplug GDO.
2. Place GDO remote close to homelink light.
3. Hold down both for awhile.
4. After several tries, the homelink light only blinks slowely, not rapidly.
5. Plug GDO.
6. Press 'learn' button in GDO. (I trained my GDO remote this way and it works)
7. Hold down homelink button.
8. The 'learn' light at GDO blinks and should stop blinking when the remote is trained. But it keeps blinking.
9. No rapid blinking in homelink light.

BTW, I have 'Genie' GDO from HomeDepot.

 

Ok, I think I have a Genie with Rolloing code too. Try these steps:

1. Unplug GDO.
2. Plug GDO.
3. Press 'learn' button in GDO. (Rapid blinking)
4. Hold down homelink button for four seconds.
5. Repeat Step 4 if nothing happens.


Also, you must press and hold the Homelink button longer than regular remotes to send the signal.

 

You don't have to reprogram you GDO, just program the Homelink in the van to learn your remote's code. It appears you never trained the Homelink in the van properly. Make sure your remote still activates the GDO, and follow the steps to clear your Homelink in the van and then program it. I did mine away from the GDO, so I never had to unplug it. I also never had to touch anything with the GDO other than the remote. Good luck, you'll get it!

 

Did you press the two outside Homelink buttons for about 20 seconds to clear the existing information (the red light starts to flash) before you started? Then follow your steps. My Genie works just fine. The only things I did different were clearing the old codes and not unplugging it (doesn't matter).

 

Yes, I did clear it to start with so I know what the 'rapid' blinking looks like. So did you get the rapid blinking after just GDO remote and homelink button matching? Or did you have to do the 'learn' thing before getting the rapid blinking.

 

Can't remember, but it's not rocket science . I'm sure you'll get it. Just play with it. You could also try calling the number in the manual for assistance. They'll walk you through it over the phone.

 

I just installed garage door opener, but the homelink button from Ody is not working. The manual said the homelink light will blink rapidly after pressing both garage remote and the homelink button. But it never happened. Also, I tried to use "learn" button from my garage door opener and that didn't work either.
Any suggestions???

I know what your talking about, you are talking about programing the Ody homelink buttom to you garage door opener and it states that the remote should be held 3 to4 inches away from botton. Well forget it! put the garage remote right up next to the button as you are pushing the homelink button. I had the same problem.
And yes, you don't have to guess, if the light is blinking fast or not, it flashes real fast, if it picks up the code.

 

If your garage door opener was made after 1996, it probably has a rolling code...in which case you will have to actually use your garage door opener (not the remote) to program your Homelink.

Read the Homelink instructions in the Honda Manual carefully. Some of the GDO remotes stop transmitting after 2 seconds. My remote seems to be one like that. The instructions said you might have to release the remote button and press it again every 2 seconds. First I tried just held the button for a long time but Homelink failed to learn the code. Then I tried releasing the GDO remote and pressing it again every two seconds. After doing that for 10 seconds or so, whola, Homelink learned the code.

Another tip for those GDO that has a lock button, you don't need to unplug the GDO, just press the lock button while you're doing the training of the Homelink. Unlock it before you test whether the Homelink has learned the code or not. Good luck azilny.

No need to unplug or anything else; here are the steps:

1. hold 2 outer buttons 20 secs
2. hold remote next to homelink in van until flash blinking becomes slow
3. verify it didn't 'catch' the rolling code (2 secs of fast blinking followed by solid light) whenever i pressed the homelink button
4. pushed 'learn' button on GENIE (behind the faceplate where the light bulb is on the left as I'm facing the rear of garage)
5. ran quickly back to van (you got 30 seconds) and pressed the homelink button solidly (for like 1 second).
6. pressed it a second time
7. then whenever I pressed & held for like 1/2-1 sec, up & down goes the door

et voila

 

You may have programmed it properly and not know it. You need to press the key(s) you programmed in for at least 2 seconds before the garage door opens/closes. I didn't like the way this works, I like to just press the button once and door opens/closes and not have to "press and hold" button for 2 seconds in order for it to work.

Maybe this is the issue???

Thanks NYVRAM and 98wannabe for finally clarifying a real solution and fix to programing to a rolling code Genie garage door opener. Your posts in 2002 and 2003 fixed my 2008 programing problem. The Honda manual instructions might actually take you down the two step process, but you clarified.
1. program HomeLink to the remote
2. program HomeLink to the GDO (garage door opener) with the learn function.

 

I've tried to program my 03's homelink to work with my liftmaster gdo. After finishing all the steps (learning and training for rolling codes), all my homelink does (but it does it really well!) is turn the light on the gdo on or off--weird because my original remote doesn't have a button to toggle only the light. Any suggestions?

 

I was able to program my Garage door opener after disabling wireless garage door operation instead of turning off. Also programmed the second and third buttons to arm/disarm my X10 based security system.

I have an Allister ARD IIA GDO. I'm not sure if HomeLink is compatable or not, however, the previous owner of this home used an integrated opener in his truck so I'm assuming that it must be compatible. I've read the tips about clearing the codes first, checking to see if it's a rolling code system (it's from 1987, not a rolling code system), replacing the battery and still nothing. I'm thinking that maybe it's not compatible. Any other ideas before I stop trying to program this?

if it's not a rolling code, it's even easier - reset the homelink system (outside two buttons for half a minute or so), then train one of the buttons to the garage door remote - hold the homelink button in the van down, then keep pressing and holding the remote button until the homelink trains on it (so press, hold for a few seconds, lift off, then press, etc. - until the homelink transmitter trains on it) - with a non-rolling code system, the remote code is fixed (doesn't change) - you get the homelink system to mimic it and you are done. With a rolling code system, you train the homelink system to one of the rolling code remotes, then train the garage door opener to recognize the homelink system (hence the second step).

 

I had a problem with mine holding/keeping the code (Genie Excellerator with rolling code).

The Homelink people told me to replace the battery in my hand held remote to send a stronger signal when programming.

This worked!

This was the first Homelink person who did more than just walk me through the procedure. I had also taken it to Honda who was no help.

It works fine now.

 

I became frustrated last night when I first tried to program HomeLink and couldn't get it to work. Of course, it was rainy and dark, so I didn't try very hard.

This morning, after resetting the HomeLink, (pressing two outside buttons for 20 seconds) programming worked like a charm.

 

My weirdness: after trying a million times to get mine to do anything except toggle the light on or off, I programmed the middle button instead of the left and now it works perfectly. I've been meaning to try programming the left button with my parents' GDO (same kind) to see if my left button is somehow broken, but keep forgetting when I have the chance.

 

Thanks for the suggestions, but prior to my original post, I had tried all of those things. I replaced the battery, tried all three buttons, nothing.

The only thing similar to my experience was:

I became frustrated last night when I first tried to program HomeLink and couldn't get it to work. Of course, it was rainy and dark,....

I kind of doubt that external environmental conditions have anything to do with the ability to program HomeLink...but that's the only thing that I have not yet tried. I guess I will try it again when it's not dark and rainy outside...but I'm not holding out any hope.

Any other ideas?

 

My door opener has 2 types of remote: visor and keychain. I could not program homelink with keychain remote, no matter what I tried, visor remote did the job on the first try.
